Just returned from a stay at The Royal Islander La Terrasse Resort. The accommodations here were just average. The unit was rather small, especially the bedroom. The furnishings were spartan, although in good condition. The bathroom was very basic offering only a 3' shower. The unit was very clean. The only amenity which was offered was an outdoor pool. Again, nothing special. It was located right next to the airport runway, and after viewing the initial few arriving flights, the appeal wore off. It tended to be noisy and the smell of jet fuel was not pleasant.
The staff at the desk and in the hotel were not helpful or friendly at all. No greetings, no orientation to the resort or to the island. You were definitely left on your own to figure out what to do, where to go, where to eat, etc. The in room booklet was informative, though. Some policies were annoying: required deposits on towels and in room safes, $30 fee for parking.
We were grateful that the island of St Maarten itself was so spectacular so that the hotel became less important. The restaurants were extraordinary (but expensive), the beaches and water unbelievably beautiful, the weather perfect. Plenty to do like shopping, parasailing, snorkeling, catamarran day trips, casinos, and more. You could do as much or as little as you wanted. We found just the right mix of relaxation and activity. This island experience was simply wonderful.
