We just returned from our honeymoon and our stay at the Sonesta Maho was wonderful. The resort is well taken care of (they were tending to the garden every day) and the pools are fabulous! The beach was a little rough, but still fun. I was a little leery about the planes landing and taking off all day, but all the previous posters are right - it's not distracting at all. In fact, it's quite entertaining. You only have to worry when the big jets take off (which is very infrequently) that you're not on the beach directly behind the runway - you'll get the exfoliation of your life! We got some great pictures though! Two little problems during our stay - one with our toilet and one with kids in the next room crying all night (yes, there were little kids and pre-teens around, but not excessively so and not disruptive at the pools, etc.) - but management addressed both immediately.
On-site: the food at the Pointe Restaurant was superb. I believe it is only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights off season. The Palms Grille did get old - not much of a selection and some of it was microwaved (but the pizza was fantastic!). And even though the buffet "theme" is changed every day, that gets old. (NOTE: I had read through previous posts that tipping is encouraged to make your service better. We did for every single person from breakfast through dinner, bartenders, drivers, etc - but it really didn't improve the service.) HIGHLY recommend off site restaurants Bijatsu and Paris Bistro - absolutely wonderful food and presentation at both. We got to watch the street carnivale while dining al fresco at Paris Bistro. Cheri's was closed while we were there, so we didn't get to experience that (they were re-opening after hurricane season the day after we had to leave). I can't speak for anyone else as far as all-inclusive goes, but it was worth it for us just because of the drinks - it was so hot and humid there that we were constantly drinking bottles of water, soda, and of course, mixed drinks. I can't imagine how much we would have spent on bottles of water if we weren't all inclusive!
The Dutch side has all the gambling (37 casinos) with Casino Royale being right across the street from the Sonesta. Very small casino - nothing like what we have here in America - but we won a little and it was fun. Saw a show there that was a cross between Cirque de Soleil and Cabaret. Very entertaining. The French side has no gambling, but you can be naked on the beach (and they are!). Orient Beach was pure heaven - the water, the sand, the sun. Heaven. We went one day as part of our all inclusive through Sonesta so the trip there was free (cabs are expensive - there is no meter, you have to haggle a price before you get in!) and we got our beach chairs for free and paid $3 for the umbrella - which you NEED. The sun was very strong (don't forget sunscreen). Didn't need bug spray as some posters advised. Shopping on both sides of the island is phenominal - great prices on jewelry.
One note about renting cars - yes it is easy and inexpensive, but a lot of trouble! The roads are horrible and are not marked very well. Every evening by the pool we heard many stories of couples waiting hours for help because they got a flat and had no spare, some of the cars obviously were not well maintained and the renters were being blamed for "damage" to the vehicle, etc. Didn't need that hassle. Luckily Sonesta Maho is within walking distance of great restaurants, shops, grocery store, beaches, casino and one of the best bars - Sunset Beach Bar! That is definitely a must!
All in all, Sonesta Maho was the perfect setting for a romantic honeymoon destination......and we're going back for our anniversary next year!
