“You get what you pay for!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

Weather was spectacular!! Sun was bitingly hot!! Just visited for 5 days. As for Sonesta Maho hotel which promotes families to vacation there, they really do not accommodate. Kids club is secluded; no welcoming kit as the website stated. The staff is somewhat aloof and friendly when they want to be. No kids menu whatsoever so hopefully your kids are not picky eaters. Only 1 restaurant *Italian on the premise aside from main eating area for B, L & D. and the Palms grill mainly for lunch. Drinks were great; no skimming there *ask for Cheryl and her famous BBC!! Overall a nice stay; definitely would go back, but not until the Hotel goes thru serious room renovations. Free wifi should be all over the premises not just restricted to the lobby. Also beware because the hotel does not tell you that they place a hold of $50 each day of your stay on your credit card for incidentals. Don't worry its credited back when you check out.

Background: My wife and I went to St. Maarten with 10 friends and stayed from August 18-25, 2013. We paid for the all-inclusive.

First, St. Marrten is beautiful and I'd go back in a second. Very friendly people, lots to see and do on the island and the beaches and water are incredible.

With that said, the Sonesto Maho Beach Resort we stayed at was mediocre at best. Given the amount of money we spent on the trip, the value was not there. The biggest complaint we have is that the service is horrible. Very slow, poor attitudes and losing reservations we made for dinner - twice!

Besides poor customer service, the resort kept running out of things, from beach towels to beer, food items, etc. This was not an isolated incident, this was almost daily.

Other issues included a non-working ice machine on our floor, having to wait hours (no exaggeration) to get new towels after the room was cleaned, and a refrigerator that did not keep the contents cold (we turned it to the coldest setting).

Room Tip: Stay in the newer building because it's nicer and request a higher floor (7+) to minimize noise...

I really enjoyed my stay at this location. The staff was very accommodating, there was a variety of food choices, and the evening entertainment was very good-- the music wasn't too loud, and was family friendly.
Having said that, the resort really needs quite a bit of tender loving care. The swim up pool had visible black mould and the liner was not even in some places-- which is a safety issue. As well, they charge for computer or wi-fi access. Most three plus star resort facilities will provide these amenities free. The manager did mention that the resort is in the middle of a three year renovation plan.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms located next to the stairs/elevator.

Me and my wife went in honeymoon to St Martin and during four nights we stayed in this hotel.
The installations such as swimming pool, bars and concierge was ok, but the rooms are terrible, old, musty smell, very bad, don't recommend. Besides that, during the breakfast you have sharing your food with crows.

Dear Valued Guest,
Your comments have been duly noted and we are sorry that your room was not to your expectation. We are presently upgrading all our rooms and hope to have this completed as soon as possible. As we are an island, we do have a lot of small Carribbean birds and since the terrace is an open area they do tend to visit the guests as they are having breakfast. Also, some of our guests feeds them and this, of course, encourages them to come around. We thank you for letting us know of your experience and hope that you will visit us in the near future.

That was my sentiment when I opened the door to my room. Lobby check in was smooth. Lobby was a bit noisy due to the air hockey and ping pong table around the corner and all of the hard surfaces. Three elevators made for little if any wait getting to my room on the 9th floor of the "tower". Opening the door to my garden view room the first time was quite pleasing. The curtains were pulled back and the late afternoon sunlight filled the room. White linens on the bed and a spacious room with a private balcony beyond made for a great first impression. Bathroom was huge with lots of countertop.

Apparently the room wasn't completely ready as housekeeping knocked on the door within minutes of my arrival to deliver towels. I hadn't noticed. Then the front desk called to inform me that they had issued me the wrong colored wrist bracelet as I had not prepaid for the breakfast option.

I stopped by the front desk on my way out to explore the grounds. This place is big and has a lot to offer. Indoor games for all ages, even slots for adults if you are so inclined. A large pool with a swim up bar at one end and a waterfall at the other with a few fat cats and iguanas in between. Nicely landscaped all the way to the dining area in a separate building nearer to the shore. Turns out that this is where you need to go for coffee in the morning as none is offered in the main lobby.

Overall, a nice place to stay with a lot to offer. Wish I could have stayed longer.

The Sonesta Maho Beach may or may not be what you are looking for, thus my average rating.
On a whole, this is a perfectly servicable and well run property. How can anyone complain while in a Carribean paradise?.However- location, location...
Maho is very near the airport. Like down the driveway. (Note all of those dapper airline capatains checking in)--that said, it is not a quiet, tucked away gem on the island..It is run well, it is clean- I have stayed numerous times and have never had to change rooms or complain.Yes, it is damp..again- we are on an island here--things get damp.
The pool area is very nice, I have traveled alone as well as with children- we have enjoyed it. The beach is less impressive- but if you want to spot airplanes on St Maarten's famous beach--this is the one you see in the photos.
Dining options are very limited. They are trying to refurbish the area- but aside from a few strip mall type restaurants and the Sunset Bar and Grill ( a must for lunch or drinks) there just isnt much in the way of food there.
I would not reccomend the all- inclusive package, again, reson being- this is not a quaint tucked away resort. It is a hotel- and the grounds, although nicely kept- will not entertain you adquately to never want to leave. The food is served buffet style. By asking those who have had it- its not that impressive.
OK. So the bottom line is, this is a clean, affordable jumping off spot on St Maarten. Its is not quiet nor overtly exciting. But it is a good place to have as a home base while you explore the island. I will stay here again- no problem.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade what can it hurt?
