I love TripAdvisor and use it often so of course I read reviews before booking a room at Captain Oliver's. I wish I had seen the review by "DencUK" because it summed up my experience.
My first impression of the hotel was that it was charming. There are many tropical plants on the grounds and it's location on the marina is rather picturesque. We arrived at the hotel earl, our room was ready and check-in was very quick and pain-free. This would become the highlight of the stay.
We went to our room and unpacked. The room was a little grimy along the lower portion of the walls, but the sheets were clean. There was water left in the coffee maker from God knows when. The safe requires a lock available at the front desk which requires a $150.00 deposit.
The balcony was nice and had a pretty view of the marina. The rooms along the "ocean" had much nicer landscaping and were more isolated. Try to get on of those if you can. The pool was decent.
The staff in the lobby were awful. Absolutely no help whatsoever. They were not able to make any type of recommendations. Not for restaurants, not for beaches, not for snorkel trips, nothing. The only thing that they can do is call taxis for you and print passwords for the internet.
On the subject of Taxis...RENT A CAR! I cancelled a car rental based on the St. Martin Tourist Board information stating that taxis and buses were easy, frequent, and inexpensive. WRONG! Captain Oliver's location is the worst possible location on the island if you want to go anywhere else. It's location on the border of the French and Dutch sides means that you are equally far from anything. Cabs were expensive, $18-20 to anywhere on the French Side (Grand Case, Marigot, etc.) and $35 if you want to get the Dutch Side (Phillipsburg, Sampson bay, etc.). Add 25% from 10PM to Midnight and 50% after midnight. Buses only occasionally stop by the hotel and only if they are dropping someone off. I had booked a midsize car from Alamo and would have paid $99 for three days, instead our Taxi bill ran over $200 for the same time.
The restaurant at the hotel has decent burgers. The breakfast is overpriced...$15 for a mediocre buffet. Not that you would actually have to pay for it, because you could come and go and the restaurant staff could care less. Actually, I think that they would rather you just eat and go because if you paid it would mean that they would actually have to work. The process of sliding a credit card or making change might be too taxing for them and might cut into their gossiping and complaining to one-another.
Do not make reservations for excursions at the hotel. Twice we made reservations for snorkel trips and twice they were cancelled. Once we were notified. The second time, we arrived at the meeting point for the excursion (the hotel lobby) and after waiting fifteen minutes passed the departure time, we inquired at the desk about the excursion and was told that "someone" from the activities office called for us but the desk clerk neither took a message nor forwarded the call. Very helpful!
I quickly accessed the internet and found a tour company at the Grand Case Beach Club. The guys at that hotel said that they had just sent out their last excursion for the day (it was just passed 2PM) but if we could get there quickly they would get us out to Creole Rock for some snorkeling. We took a cab to the Grand Case Beach Club which was about 45 minutes with wait time for the taxi to get to Captain Oliver's. Laurent, at the beach club took us right out to the rock, gave us a quick lesson about where to snorkel and then left us. He picked us up an hour and twenty minutes later as promised. The charge was $30 total, $40 less than we would have paid through Captain Oliver's for the same excursion.
All in all, this was the worst hotel experience I have ever had. In fact, I would not consider it a hotel at all. It's nothing more than a place to sleep. Do your self a favor and spend more to stay in a more centrally located hotel. What you might save in taxi fare alon would more than offset a higher room rate.
If you do find yourself at Captain Oliver's know this...
There is an ATM at the Oyster Bay Beach Club across the bay. Take the free water taxi from the dock.
Take a lot of cash and leave the credit cards at home. If you pay with a credit card you get charged in Euros. The island is heavily dependent upon US tourists and will offer very favorable exchange rates (many places offered 1E=1$) if you pay in cash.
Good luck to you! You were warned!!!!
