My husband and I enjoyed our first anniversary dinner here last month and I must say this place can do no wrong! We started with the drink special of the evening, which was a frozen concoction. Though it was good, it was a little too heavy for my likings for a pre-dinner drink. We were then presented with a cold appetizer of yogurt (tangy as Europeans are used to, not sweet like American yogurt), and lobster pieces. Though I would never think of combining yogurt and lobster, it was very refreshing and delicious.
We split the "Taste of Crab" appetizer, described as "Fresh crab meat and celeriac “Napoleon” Style, tomato tartar, horseradish dressing" which included some very surpirsing tangy notes due to the horseradish dressing. We enjoyed their bread, baked in-house, while waiting for our entrees. Rather than getting a bottle of wine, we allowed Stephane, the sommelier, to choose wine pairings for each course. I wish I would have written down the names of the wines, because they paired beautifully! Both selections were Bordeaux wines made from 100% cabernet grapes. The one selected for the appetizer was quite smooth but accented the flavor of the crab and horseradish well.
My husband ordered the "Taste of Lamb" as his entree, which like all things at Le Cottage, was presented as a piece of art on a plate. The lamb was cooked to perfection and easily came off the bone. I ordered one of the specials, which included 6 sauteed jumbo shrimp served over sweet potato puree. The shrimp were sweet and tender, and were enhanced by the sweet potatoes and other seasonings.
For dessert we split the blueberry violet souffle, which we ordered in the beginning of our meal. The souffle was very delicate and airy, melting in your mouth and was paired with blueberry sorbet.
We have eaten at other restaurants in Grand Case and this is the best we've experienced there (and perhaps the best restaurant we've been to anywhere!). Prices are reasonable considering the current exchange rate and every bite is simply heaven. Truly a slice of exquisite French cuisine in the Caribbean. The decor is sylish, and the location perfect for either a private meal if you sit in the rear of the restaurant, or for people watching if you sit out front. When we return to St. Martin we will definitely be stopping here again, even if it means eating at lolos during the rest of our stay!
