With Balenbouche it does seem to be a case of "horses for courses". The web-site sums it up quite clearly in its "Is Balenbouche for you?" section. True, there are insects and other creepy crawlies and the mossie nets take some tethering down; true, restaurants are few and far between in this part of the island (go to Debbie's when the buffet is on, and to the Reef in Vieux Port - more dogs - for lunches and beach); true, it is a bit of a scramble down to the beach; true, the kitchens are not really up to self-catering standard; true, the water is never hot and true, if you book Almond Cottage you also book a dog called Fish who sleeps wrapped round the loo off the main bedroom. However, all this palls into insignificance compared with the sheer beauty of the place and the warmth of the welcome extended by the owners. We were of course visiting in the low season so the place was very quiet, but even so Ute and Verena served breakfast every day and dinner most nights, both meals eaten on the verandah of the main house surrounded by flowers and humming-birds (and, of course, the dogs and house tortoise). We had a great boat-trip with a fisherman friend of Ute's. Arriving fresh off the plane from England I felt I really had landed in paradise and felt my holiday was over when I left a week later, with two weeks still to go on the island. I could have sat by the pond watching the bird-life for the whole three weeks. Overall, the south of the island was much more to our liking than the north, and I imagine this would be even more the case in the high season.
Our second week was at Villa Beach Cottages near Castries, which has people waxing lyrical elsewhere on this site, and which was certainly beautifully appointed and well-run, but which was soulless in comparison to Balenbouche. It has to be admitted, though, that my teenage daughters probably had a slight preference for Villa Beach with its televisons and air-conditioning.
Our third week was spent at the Fox Grove Hotel on the east coast - my second favourite with great food, great views, friendly owners, a lovely pool and yet more dogs. Wonderful place to watch hummingbirds as they put out feeders for them.
I think we probably chose the three best hotels on the island for our personal likes and dislikes, but Balenbouche would have to rank as just about my favourite place to stay in the whole world.
