“Dream-like Amazing Adventure at Mago!!! A+”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

We just returned from spending the week in Soufriere, St. Lucia at the truly amazing Mago Estate Hotel!!! I am a bit bewildered by the other reviews as they couldn't have been staying at the same place we were.. perhpas it's just who you are and what you're looking for or how long ago you stayed as Mago is under new management. We love adventure, we would never want a Sandals cookie cutter experience - why be anywhere? We are sporty, we liked the hills and the steps keeping us in shape, we loved the sounds of the village below (music, dogs, roosters mixed with the tree frogs), you can take the bus anywhere for $1-$3 US with the locals, you can grab a water taxi and see the coast or jump to a pretty beach.) The drive in volcano, Petit Piton, snorkeling, a botanical garden, 2 great tourable plantations are all in walking distance.
We were blown away by the hospitality of the genuine & friendly staff that made us feel like the most important people in the world! The food at Mago was A-Mazing. We stayed in one of the beautiful Jr. Caribean Suites that I could live a very happy life in. The small pools were just right for a fun or romantic dip.. the ocean below provides more water if you want it and has plenty of great snorkeling opps. We spent lots of time in town with the locals, walked all over eating mangos wherever we were, climbed Petit Piton, snorkeled at it's base, jumped a bus to Marigot bay and Castries, Ocean Kayaked, hit the markets..... the list is long. But the thing is no matter how many wonderful things we did and saw in St. lucia w/out hesitation both of us agree that our favorite part was MAGO. Dining with Orlando (award winning consult chef on a mission to deliver authentic local caribbean flavors) was AMAZING! (food artist is now on board!), Breakfast in that magical place with those views and our friendly staff every morning was WONDERFUL!
Perhaps marketing could be directed to adventure travelers or adventure racers, people who like to stay fit, people who like to find authentic culture in a magical place, and you can now add foodies to the list. Mago was everything and more than we dreamed it would be! 5 Stars!!!

“Needs a lot of work”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2012

We only stayed for one night during our vacation and i'm pleased it wasn't any longer. The staff, however, cannot be faulted. Waddy the manager has only been there for 2 and half months and i hope he can make the changes necessary as his diligent and friendly staff deserve it.

The rooms offer beautiful views of Soufriere but sadly that is the only good thing i could say about it. The bed was solid and incredibly noisy. The wooden frame was on it's last legs and certainly not suitable for couples wanting a private night. The fan was extremely noisy and ineffective as it wasn't over the bed so we were forced to sleep the wrong way around to try and feel the effect in a non air conditioned room.

The swimming pools were very small and uninviting. The water was cloudy and a lot of debris floating. Need a good clean! The beach is not walk-able so even more disappointing.

We were going to eat in the restaurant but the menu had only 3 main course options. A starter choice was a mango salad and it wasn't mango season - quite off putting.

If you want a night on a budget in a unique place with very basic facilities Mago is for you just be prepared for a very average hotel in need of some TLC.

“Meet St Lulcia !!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

This is a great place to really get to know St Lucia and get a real taste of the Caribbean. It was such fun......Stayed two days at the end of two weeks holiday and had a great time. Its only 45 minutes from the airport by taxis. The staff were fantastic they just could do enough for me, my room had the most amazing view and if you want a real taste of the Caribbean, then eat in the hotel. Real locally cooked food. LOVELY.The market in Soufriere is worth a visit as are the lovely beaches you can reach around the coast by water taxis. If you are looking for the perfect estate spa etc where you dont go out of the compound then Mago is not for you but if you really want to stay in the rainforest, meet the local people and experience the real Caribbean . Give it a go...... The Hotel is under new managemant and they are really making a difference. They cant do enough for you.

Room Tip: Had the master room in the house great. Loved it.

“What to know before you go”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2012

I pretty much agree with the previous reviews. Mago has a fantastic location and is so unique. Too bad more attention isn't being paid to details. There are workers around there but they just don't seem to be accomplishing anything. What a shame! We paid less than $200US/night, so for us the price was right. Our worst complaint was the mattress. It was thin and hard, obviously hadn't ever been replaced since the hotel was built. I always take earplugs when I travel so I did have to pop them in when the sounds of Soufriere rolled up the mountainside. Be ready to hike when you go to your room and take a flashlight. Except for the views, do NOT believe any of the photos you see on their brochure. You won't find that white sand beach anywhere on St. Lucia. Maybe it was taken on Anguilla or a more northern island.
Positives: The views can't be beat. We ended up having dinner there 2 nights and were quite impressed though breakfast was the exact same every day. The price we paid was right, we had privacy. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately, if more attention had been paid to details, we wouldn't have had to ask the staff for anything.
If we had a comfortable mattress, we'd go back since we do like to stay away from all-inclusives and busy hotels.
This is NOT the place for a honeymoon!

“Agree with the other reviews!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2012

Stunning location and really friendly staff. The view from our room was amazing. Do not pay full price as you will be extremely disappointed, but if you want a few nights with a beautiful view then go for it. The manager was very helpful with our complaints and seems to recognise that some serious investment is needed to help Mago get back its former glory that the marketing literature promotes. If this happens, I would go back so check it out fully in advance.

Room Tip: Don't get swayed by the private plunge pool - you won't want to go in it!
