“Meet St Lulcia !!!”

This is a great place to really get to know St Lucia and get a real taste of the Caribbean. It was such fun......Stayed two days at the end of two weeks holiday and had a great time. Its only 45 minutes from the airport by taxis. The staff were fantastic they just could do enough for me, my room had the most amazing view and if you want a real taste of the Caribbean, then eat in the hotel. Real locally cooked food. LOVELY.The market in Soufriere is worth a visit as are the lovely beaches you can reach around the coast by water taxis. If you are looking for the perfect estate spa etc where you dont go out of the compound then Mago is not for you but if you really want to stay in the rainforest, meet the local people and experience the real Caribbean . Give it a go...... The Hotel is under new managemant and they are really making a difference.They cant do enough for you.

Room Tip: Had the master room in the house great. Loved it.

I pretty much agree with the previous reviews. Mago has a fantastic location and is so unique. Too bad more attention isn't being paid to details. There are workers around there but they just don't seem to be accomplishing anything. What a shame! We paid less than $200US/night, so for us the price was right. Our worst complaint was the mattress. It was thin and hard, obviously hadn't ever been replaced since the hotel was built. I always take earplugs when I travel so I did have to pop them in when the sounds of Soufriere rolled up the mountainside. Be ready to hike when you go to your room and take a flashlight. Except for the views, do NOT believe any of the photos you see on their brochure. You won't find that white sand beach anywhere on St. Lucia. Maybe it was taken on Anguilla or a more northern island.
Positives: The views can't be beat. We ended up having dinner there 2 nights and were quite impressed though breakfast was the exact same every day. The price we paid was right, we had privacy. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Unfortunately, if more attention had been paid to details, we wouldn't have had to ask the staff for anything.
If we had a comfortable mattress, we'd go back since we do like to stay away from all-inclusives and busy hotels.
This is NOT the place for a honeymoon!

Stunning location and really friendly staff. The view from our room was amazing. Do not pay full price as you will be extremely disappointed, but if you want a few nights with a beautiful view then go for it. The manager was very helpful with our complaints and seems to recognise that some serious investment is needed to help Mago get back its former glory that the marketing literature promotes. If this happens, I would go back so check it out fully in advance.

Room Tip: Don't get swayed by the private plunge pool - you won't want to go in it!

Yes! We are re-vamping the entire property right now, and relaunching Mago with physical upgrades as well as service upgrades. And, our food program has been completely upscaled by our award-winning Chef Consultant. I know that you would be pleased.

Wow this place was really interesting.. As stated in the title, we thought that the biggest problem with this place was the discrepancy between how it's pictured in the marketing material and what it's actually like.

Let me give you an example. While we were staying at Mago I was reading a (local) St Lucia guide that described the island, the sights, and also the hotels. In that booklet there was an advertisement for Mago as well. It pictured a more or less luxury eco resort with a spa, and showed pictures that had to be either taken 10 years ago when the place was new or photoshopped. The same booklet had a table describing all the services in different hotels. For Mago, the table announced that the place has among others a spa, a tennis court, conference rooms, fitness room, room service, sauna, gymnasium and a beach. Too bad the place had none of these.

Portraying the place like this creates the main problem - almost everyone staying here seems to be disappointed. The place has a lot going for it as well: the atmosphere is actually really nice (the place is built straight into the jungle), some of the personnel seem to be trying hard (Jerma for example was really good) and the view is truly nice. Unfortunately the other side of the coin includes very dirty areas, run down materials, an almost unusable pool and apparently a rather old water system (we had no running water for 24 hours, which meant we had to shower and use the toilet in another room).

We really appreciated the free upgrade we got (we got the big eco sweet although we had booked a cheaper room) upon arrival, and the open-air room was very exotic and a nice welcoming to the caribbean! After three nights there we were however ready to change to another hotel with cleaner rooms.

Dos:
- come here for a night or two if you like the idea of a open air room (beware of the sounds of Soufriere though. We were not bothered but it might be a good idea to take ear plugs with you just in case)
- know what to expect: an exotic experience with is very different from the all inclusive places (in a good way)
- use one of the offers - the normal rates are way overpriced

Donts:
- forget dining in this place, we had a 30 dollar seafood pasta that tasted (and looked) like it had been taken straight from a can and had been heated in a microwave oven
- dont expect anything luxurious in this place
- dont stay here the whole holiday - a few nights can be refreshingly different!

I decided to give it 3 stars because it is a bit difficult to decide how good it actually was. If i had paid half the price I paid, and had the marketing been a bit more truthful (and my expectations would thus have been on the right level) I would probably give it a very good rating.

Room Tip: I would go for the open air rooms, they are a nice experience. Do, however, bring earplugs.

Through a UK website, we paid almost $300/night (inc 18% tax) for a 3-person room. We only paid that because our first 5 choices in the area were full on our dates. As I booked on-line, I didn't realise that we could negotiate. A lesson learnt ! At a sensible price (maybe $200/night max) this could be an incredible experience. It has uniqueness and character but it was obvious that the owner (who, apparently, wants to sell) isn't spending any money on up-keep. Apart from the "communal" areas, the whole place needed sprucing-up. Sweeping away leaves and some painting would have been a good idea. The communal pool was filthy. Not surprisingly, I didn't see anyone in it. The individual small "pool" on our balcony wasn't very clean either - and, frankly, I couldn't see the point of having them. The steps (119 to our room) could have been dangerous to some people and should have been better lit. We also had great difficulty in locking our room and 3 requests to repair the lock were ignored. At breakfast we were asked if we wanted to book dinner but they couldn't give us the menu nor the cost because the chef didn't decide till later in the day...(hopefully they've now chosen a dinner menu in advance) On the plus side, the bed was huge and comfortable and the room and balcony were very spacious. The view of the Pitons (from our bed each morning) was truly magnificent. The bathroom was fine (once I had repaired the shower) The restaurant and seating/bar areas were superbly designed & decorated. These areas were open-air - actually cut into the rock-face. Pity that the bar was never manned and so, wasn't used....what a waste!! There's free wi-fi but signal is only at reception. We felt sorry for some of the staff as they were very friendly and helpful but were working for an owner who didn't seem to care (my words not theirs). Noisy cockrells are everywhere in the Caribbean. Annoying, but what can you do? We didn't think the noise from the town was that bad (apart from the re-construction of a washed-away bridge. That work must be almost finished by now - mid Feb) No need use taxis to/from town....It's only a 10-15 min walk and not that far to the hotel grounds' lower entrance. Eating out is expensive. Around $30 for just main meal. Extra for starter/dessert. To conclude : Maybe try 1 night ($200 max inc bfast & tax) and see if improvements made. Then decide. It could be a great place to stay !

Room Tip: Each room is individually set in the hillside. Ask for one close to the restaurant to avoid so many...

My wife and I traveled to St. Lucia in Janaury of 2012 and for our last night, we left the WindJammer to stay by the Pitons. The Mago is literally a mess. The driveway leading in is broken and extremely difficult to enter. Once we found someone to check us in, we marched up and down flights of broken and frightening concrete stairs lugging our own suitcases for five long minutes to our room. It was as pictured, but everything had a layer of dust and worse, a major tree in front of our balcony, nearly blotting out the entire Pitons. Lizards were eveywhere and I only hoped they weren't in our bed later that night. The pool had hundreds of leaves inside and the deck hadn't seen a broom in weeks. We were encouraged to make a dinner reservation and passed. We left to go out at 6PM and there wasn't a soul in the restaraunt or again at the front desk. On our return that evening all we could hear was the incredible noise from the town right below us, (music, cars, heavy machinery, etc). On top of that, the dogs barked all night, until the roosters took over at day break. In the morning, my wife challenged life/limb and walked those steps again to get a hair dryer. It was dropped off later, only to not work. I did call the Ladera to try and get another room locally and the best price was $750, so granted Souffries is expensive. If you can afford it, stay at the Ladera, or Jalousie, anywhere else. If not, check out the Pitons, (they are something to see) for the day and drive elswhere. Either way, this place was an over-priced dump and we were out the door by 7AM the following morning. After a wonderful week, it was nothing less than a horrible finish to our trip and I really felt cheated. I am very tempted to leave my contact info, just to repeatedly tell all to stay away.

Room Tip: Call any/elsewhere. Run AWAY!

The Mago Hotel was the 3rd hotel we stayed at in St. Lucia.
Facts:
• We stayed in one of the “eco” rooms. Don’t be fooled that “eco” has anything to do with saving the environment besides the fact that they didn’t use any energy or materials to construct a fourth wall in your room. These rooms are totally open to the Soufriere air. Your privacy is somewhat protected though you may just be careful when having a shower. I didn’t mind because I was on vacation (what the hell!) but my partner was a little shy that maybe someone in the restaurant could see us.
• We paid $100USD/night for our room which is about half of the full price. Had we not known to barter, we would have paid a lot more. A family we met there were paying $250USD/night for a slightly larger room.
Pros:
• Its style and decor is lovely and very interesting. Lots of antiques and hand-carved statues/masks/etc. I really thought it was tastefully done.
• Rooms seemed cleaned although be prepared that you’ll find frogs and geckos in your bathroom – just part of being “eco”.
• The design of this hotel is truly spectacular. It photographs very well because it’s so unique and interesting. Be sure to take a walk around the property to see all the different walkways, rooms, pools, etc.
• Though it was loud, the beds were very comfortable.
• Maintenance guy was helpful with bags.
Cons:
• Like any Caribbean city... there are tons of roosters. Thousands it seems like. If you have one of the “eco” rooms you will 100% need ear plugs or else you’ll be up at 3 a.m. every morning. I’ve heard the rooms that are enclosed and nicely quiet.
• The restaurant was a little dirty. Its open concept, too so cats, ants, birds, etc. all have access to the plates, cups and silverware they keep out all day and night.
• Service at restaurant was below-par. They charge for every little thing. The continental breakfast is small and don’t bother asking for more toast because that’s another $3USD and it was a few days stale.
• Pools, though small weren’t well maintained.
• The damn room keys are intensely hard to use.
• The pipe in the shower backed-up a little bit one day – a stench that most people avoid when on vacation.
• You’ll need to rent a car if you’re staying here otherwise you’ll spend all your time walking up and down that hill. Whatever you do, don’t pay the atrocious cab fares. It’s a disservice to other travellers and gives those cabbies unrealistic expectations of how we value USD. A couple we met at the hotel paid $40 for a 5 minute cab ride up that hill. You’re so much better off renting a car in St. Lucia or taking the buses.
Overall:
If you’re staying in Soufriere, you’ll likely not be able to escape the roosters so this hotel is really no louder than any other in Soufriere. Don’t both with the restaurant go downtown instead,

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs and you'll enjoy your stay so much more.
