“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2006

My family stayed at La Haut Plantation in January of 2006. We had a bad experience with the hotel we booked on line so we drove up the coast of St. Lucia looking for a reasonably priced hotel that met our needs. We found it at La Haut!

The hotel was clean, and friendly. We were known to the staff by our names, not our room numbers. The hotel was small enough that we met many other travelers who stayed there as well.

The views from the hotel were remarkable. Although the property is not directly on the beach, there was a daily shuttle to the beach.

The food was fantastic. We ate at other restaurants in the area, but found the food at La Haut to be some of the best.

I would recomend this hotel to the traveler who likes a friendly, quiet atmosphere. We did have a rental car and found this to be the best way to travel the island since most tourist sights are distant, and up and down some significant inclines.

La Haut plantation, Soufriere, St Lucia. Our 2 families stayed at Rainbow Villa managed by la Haut. Food and staff at L Haut v. nice and good quality fresh produce. The views are absolutely fantastic. HOWEVER we were not told how remote and therefore INSECURE our villa was. It was not cheap, but thats st. Lucia. But there was no safe in the villaand we were told on the 3rd day to put all our valuables in the hotel safe, which we did. The next day during breakfast our villa was robbed, they got in by scaling up to balcony and getting in. they took alot including clothes, ipod, speakers, camera, money and games...... the kind of thing that you dont expect to put in a hotel safe 10 minute very steep walk away. What made this much, much worse was the unfriendly, unhelpful,BLAMING owners who said we had got what was expected, as it was obviously insecure.! We are journalists and very well travelled and have never, never had this happen. We are not inexperienced travellers, but had it been made clear when discussing the villa ( I rang and emailed several times) we would not have booked it, especially as we were travelling with young children. Beware La Haut

Stayed here for two weeks in December & it was very much what we expected from our previous research. Stunning views and location, quiet, small hotel and friendly, helpful staff. There is a generous approach; although our B & B package with Virgin specified a basic room and continental breakfast we found ourselves in the cottage with lots of room and independence, and breakfast was excellent with a wide and interesting menu. Fresh fruit, flowers and towels were provided daily and the place was clean and truly delightful. There was no telly, which suited us fine, and no regular entertainment although we were lucky to be there while a wedding took place and benefited from the steel band which was great.

Some guests were happy taking the daily shuttle down to the beach for snorkelling or diving while others booked the "resident" taxi driver for tours. We knew we wanted to get out and about round the island and pre-booked a car with Drive-o-matic which was excellent. They delivered to La Haut and it was a new 4 wheel drive. We had no problems driving and found the roads in much better condition than in Antigua. Other drivers were in the main courteous and after a while we got used to all the hairpin bends. We didn't much like the north of the island, too busy & crowded but we did like the south very much.

I would highly recommend La Haut so long as you are clear that this is an entertainment-free, quiet location and that if you want to get out and about the island you will need a car.

The hillside location of La Haut Plantation affords almost unbeatable views of the bay of Soufriere and the Pitons. Stephanie, Joe and their staff make a real effort to welcome their guests. Great attention is paid to detail - the staff are all quickly calling you by your name, rooms are thoroughly cleaned and fresh fruit and flowers are left daily, and the whole team is very friendly and helpful. Unlike larger (and probably more expensive) hotels, La Haut retains a good deal of genuine local character, but there did not seem to be any compromise in standards. The food is outstanding - I highly recommend the salt-fish prepared for breakfast with hot creole bread, and actually couldn't single one thing out on the dinner menu because I tried a lot of it and it was all delicious. Best of all is the local cocoa tea which is served with breakfast, but you can also order it during the day - it's heavenly. Because La Haut is a mile and a half out of town up quite a steep hill, it is necessary to either hire your own vehicle or use the shuttle minibus to the beach and the town unless you are looking for a lot of exercise - that said, once you are in town, the botanical gardens are within walking distance and the sulphur springs are not very far either. If you are a runner, there's very little flat ground so be prepared for some great hill training!

La Haut or Le Haut literally means "the height" in Patois, a French dialect that is commonly spoken by St. Lucians. La Haut sits on a hill overlooking Soufriere, one of the oldest towns in St Lucia.Part of a 52-acre former coconut and cocoa estate, the main Guest House possesses a unique history. Nearly 100 years old, the main guesthouse was originally a cocoa house used for fermenting and drying cocoa beans hand-picked on the estate. In 1995, the building was converted and refurbished into a 6-room guesthouse. The nearby cottage was a former copra house where coconuts were once processed.Although the rich aroma of cocoa beans no longer wafts through the air, at La Haut you can enjoy the perfume-scented, tropical fauna or the salty breeze that blows off the Caribbean Sea. ... more   less
