“Excellent resort!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

I had a two night stay in one of the ocean view villas -- the room was spectacular with excellent fit and finish. It is a bit of a hike to get around the resort with hills etc, but they offer an extensive and convenient shuttle service. Overall the service level was good but a tad inconsistent. It was about 50/50 between top level performers and the rest just doing their job. The food was the only true weak point in the resort. The menu selection was decent but the execution was not up to the standards of truly top notch resort.

Room Tip: Villas were extremely well done

The other reviews really say it all. The food was beyond our expectations and our room with private infinity pool was absolutely gorgeous! This place was so great that I told my husband and the friends we were traveling with that, if they wanted to go someplace else next year, someone else would have to choose the place because I didn't think I could top it.

Word to the wise: go all-inclusive. If you book through booking.com or another site, this option may not be mentioned to you. Ask the hotel about it. It is totally worth it, as the food is extremely expensive - you will spend more without it than you will with it, and it takes any stress you have about the food prices away so you can truly enjoy your vacation.

Also, don't miss the spa, and make the trip to Hotel Chocolat for the bean-to-bar experience - it is so cool to make your own chocolate bar and graft your own tree!

We recently spent a few days here as part of our honeymoon. This place is amazing! The setting, service and overall experience were first class. The food was truly excellent in each of the restaurants. Already looking forward to returning!

Sugar Beach is pretty, and staffed by friendly and helpful people. However, after 5, the concierge leaves and there is no onsite manager, so any problems are a fire drill, with clumsy resolution. The beach is green, the sand trucked in, and the terrain so steep that all movement within the resort requires shuttles. Also, the "butlers" are eager to please, but sloppy, double check any and all reservations they make. There are many many better resorts than this in the Caribbean.

As you will see from the other reviews, Sugar Beach is outstanding in many ways. The rooms are very spacious and have private decks and plunge pools. There is a 24 hour butler service, and the hotel provides two mobile phones pre-programmed to call them with any requests from anywhere.

The location, between the Pitons, is picturesque and the beach a decent size with white sand and sheltered from waves. There is a large pool and the beach/pool area as a whole was not overcrowded by any means.

We ate twice in the Great Room restaurant, the fine dining option, and the food was exquisite, genuinely international restaurant standard (while not being too "international" and formulaic.)

The resort is spread over a wide area uphill from the beach, and many rooms are too far to walk (unless as part of a fitness programme!) However we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes for a shuttle to take us between room and beach or restaurant. However this expanse of property means the rooms do not feel too close together which is good.

So, why not five stars? I guess I am being picky, but the service was almost too attentive, to the point of being overbearing. You cannot go fifteen minutes without being interrupted and asked if everything is alright. Sure, it is great they are concerned with ones welfare, but eventually it actually becomes too much. Better than never having any attention, granted, and it is of course a fine line.

The only other minor criticism is perhaps the staff need to be reminded how all inclusive works. No, we are not going to add service to every single bill (for zero dollars) we are presented with. So do not look at each other and point (literally) at the people who have not added a tip - it is already in the significant price we have paid.

This is always the danger when resorts allow both all inclusive and room only. Americans probably made up about 50% or the guests, so their constant 20-25% service on each check is going to prove attractive. And I was pretty glad we were all inclusive as everything in resort was seriously expensive once tax and service was added to the (U.S.) dollar price - on a par with an upmarket Manhattan hotel.

In summary, the negatives are very minor, it is a really great place and you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: There are rooms which are right on the beach if you don't the idea of the shuttle to get everywh...

my husband and i visited sugar beach to celebrate his 30th birthday. prior to arriving, we booked a couples massage, obtained information about the meal plan option, and booked transportation two and from the airport. concierge was very helpful.

upon arriving, we were taken right to our room and found out we were given a complimentary upgrade to a beachfront room! the room was amazing and we had our own lounge chairs and hammock right on the beach. i can't say enough about how peaceful it was to lay in a hammock right outside your room and hear the ocean.

this hotel is in a beautiful location and the property is excellently maintained. every morning a team of gardeners were preparing the property.

the food is excellent. i would highly recommend doing the meal plan. we found out that our room rate included breakfast and we asked our butler if we could do the lunch and dinner plan and still get the breakfast which was included in our room. he checked and came back and said that we could. i thought that this generosity set the tone for the trip. i did not feel that we were getting "nickel and dimed," and the meal plan included appetizers, entree, and dessert for lunch and dinner. i will say that the prices listed on the menu are VERY high. whether or not we ordered/ate enough to come out ahead in the meal plan is TBD, but mentally not having to worry about the prices was totally worth it in and of itself!

some other highlights in no particular order:
- we stayed 5/3-5/8 and this was a low time at the resort. i loved how peaceful it was and there was no issue getting a beach lounger in the shade or sun, table at any restaurant, and there were very few children.
- the gym was a good facility and many water sports were complimentary
- all staff are extremely friendly and go out of their way to ask how your day is going and if you're enjoying your stay
- my husband is recovering from knee surgery so he asked the butlers if they could bring him a full ice bucket 2x per day so he could ice his leg. the butlers did so without fail, and even noticed that he was putting the ice in a ziplock bag, and then started bringing the ice inside the ziplock bag! the level of service here is amazing.
- you get a sweet treat every night with your turndown service. homemade banana bread, cannelles, macarons!
- bring enough sun screen and bug spray, as there's nowhere to buy it on the property
- complimentary cans of soda, bottles of local beer, and water in the mini fridge
- do not miss the spa. we had a couple's massage in a treehouse in the rainforest with it's own plunge pool and outdoor shower. throughout the amazing massage the sound of the running waterfall into the plunge pool was an extra bit of relaxation.

all in all, a perfect vacation. i already miss this hotel!

You know the saying-things are never quite the same the next time around. In most regards things were just as good , if not better-But not in every category. The grounds remain beautiful, with views of the ocean and Piton mountains out of this world. The various room categories with their plunge pools are wonderful- most on the hilly landscape contributing to the fantastic views. The property is maintained meticulously. The staff are without a doubt the signature calling card of the resort. All being very friendly and helpful. Many of them recognized us from last year (I hope that is good) , and we were able to renew friendships. The scuba diving was easy with the operation right on the beach. Our concerns from last year regarding the aging equipment and older boat (have to do backward roll entries) remain the same, but the tremendous staff make it easy. Rumor has it that they are looking at getting a new boat. Yeah! Chairs on the beach were plentiful, both with and without shade. There was very little wait for shuttle service.
So what is the bad news to this idyllic location. The food was off this visit . Yes, there are several choices. There is fine dining at The Great Room. The service and setting makes this our favorite restaurant, but the core menu does not change, and the "specials" are suppose to change every 2 nights, but they went to every 3 in the middle of the week. I understand it was our choice to eat there often, but still variety would have been better for us. There were some great dishes, especially the appetizers, yet the heavily influenced French entries seemed to leave something to be desired. The Cane Bar has good Sushi for those of you so inclined, and the Bayside Restaurant and Bar offer a mixed variety of foods. The location is great-right on the beach. The Terrace restaurant for breakfast offers a buffet and off the menu choices-the buffet was not as favorable this year, and the pastries in general were dry and flavorless.
We recognize that our palates are picky, and for the hefty price of food and drink we expected a lot, so we spoke to several other guests to get their impressions. Our thoughts were shared by them-several guests having gone off property to try other restaurants and were quite happy. We all felt (including many of the staff) that more emphasis on local cuisine would be good. I want to emphasize that we did have some great food overall.
We greatly appreciated a nice conversation with Julian Jaumard, the restaurant manager, who patiently listened to our concerns, and took notes. I believe he felt we had some valid points, and was going to look into them.
Are we going to go back to Sugar Beach again, which is the ultimate compliment-to repeat vacations when there are so many choices in the world? The answer is a resounding YES (if they will still have us after our somewhat negative views of the food this time around) We love this place, the people .We only want to make it better and better- selfishly perhaps for our next trip-but for everyone else. So can you go back home again? We think the answer is yes.

Room Tip: The higher up on the hills, the more majestic the views
