Villa & Plunge Pool:
Our stay at Jalousie was for 8 days in May. We were in Villa #304, an Ocean View Villa Suite that had an obstructed by foliage view to the ocean. We could still see the ocean, but just not a clear shot. Views of the Pitons…. Larger than life! 304 hasn’t been remodeled yet, but we’ve stayed in worse. Almost everything worked fine, with the one thing not functioning being the light inside the plunge pool. No biggie, as I wouldn’t have wanted anyone to see me in there at night anyways, or attract bugs. Our pool was directly in the sun most of the day, so the water wasn’t too cold at night. They provide a pool skimmer so you can get any leaves before that midnight swim. The A/C could’ve been a bit more quiet, but we were happy to have any. There are 5 channels of TV if you want to watch it. There is a safe, umbrella, bug spray and a flashlight provided in the room. Overall, as far as the room being “tired” as others have said..... They’re all being remodeled; you can pay twice as much for it all then.
Food:
We went AI. Cant say if we ate as much as we paid, but it was nice not worrying about it. Drinks were plenty stout. We never went to the Plantation Room, as it really wasn’t our scene. The Bayside and The Pier were both good for us. The Pier always had a decent spread of red meat, chicken, fish and a veggie plate. What you have heard about prices is true. Bayside is your lunch spot with a Monday and Friday night dinner extravaganza. Basic spread, same deal with prices. There is also the Palm Court Bar which was an excellent place to drink beer, eat pizza and play some billiards all while watching the sunset. If you order room service, read the menu and do the math first. Then decide if it’s worth it. All in all, happily satisfied after every meal.
Beach:
What can I say? They have an awesome beach right in the middle of two huge peaks. Cool, clear turquoise water, and tons of fish. I went through 4 underwater cameras while snorkeling. In the 8 days we were there, there was only 1 day that another resort came to Jalousie. A Sandals boat pulled up, had a photo op, and left 5 minutes later. Another day, we saw a snorkel excursion arrive from somewhere, but they were only there for ½ hour or so. And if you are scared to go out far, “extra bait” to swim out with doesn’t hurt, so it may work in your advantage. =) The beach does have the red flag service, never having to wait more than what seem to be 45 seconds. The time in which we received our drinks or food was just as good. I wont say that the beach was crowded, but it would have been nice not having to share with Ladera. It was a beautiful beach area and I doubt I will ever see one better.
The Oasis Spa
Appointments have to be made through the spa directly. I recommend a days notice. A shuttle picked us up and took us to the Oasis. We checked in and were then escorted to the changing area, where you really are expected to be wearing your birthday suit under that robe. After a short walk up some stairs, you are presented with what will probably be the best view of your trip. There is even a hot tub up there you can reserve. After the extremely calming body massage, we went back to the room, where we promptly passed out from the state of Zen we were in. Besides, going to the spa and napping on a Tuesday afternoon is greatly satisfying.
Resort Property & Staff:
Clean, friendly, polite and accommodating. Whenever you stay at a hotel or resort, it’s hit or miss all around. If you’re nice, they are. If you have a bad attitude, they will as well. We have all just landed at our island paradise. Why make it hard on the people taking care of us while we are there. Our room looked good after every turn down. There were always landscapers raking and pruning. Pool cleaners were on top of the leaves as much as one can be in the jungle. You will most likely be calling for the shuttle service, as it is a very “hilly” walk around the place. I am in my late 20’s…. couldn’t do it. If you have to wait a few for the shuttle, remember one thing: there is a whole resort that doesn’t feel like doing that walk right now either. There is a spot to use the Internet if you feel the need. We don’t have any kids, but it seemed as though the 3 we saw all week were pretty happy running around playing games with the resort’s kid staff. One of my favorite parts about the resort property was the cute, exotic looking jungle kitties. They weren’t bothersome at all. Pretty jumpy actually. But they will come if you have food to give. I didn’t find that bugs or critters were an issue. You may spot a lizard every now and then, and they are not very large. We had a tiny frog on the back of our door one night. We didn’t see and tarantulas or creepy crawlies of that nature. One thing about money while there. Try not to bring a lot of large bills, as St Lucians will not accept larger bills with marks, tears or anything that makes it look worn out. You’ll just be stuck with $$ you cant use, and the front desk will not break it for you.
Excursions:
The room has a binder full of information and prices for things to do on and off the property. We did the Helicopter Tour. It was worth every penny. Your basic island tours apply. Glass bottom boat, SCUBA, deep sea fishing, Plantation Tours. If you have done any research on things to do there, you already know what you want to do.
Taxis:
Taxi service on the island is interesting. If you let the resort arrange for your pick up and drop of at the airport, you are all good on that. But, once you are at Jalousie and need taxi service, I would say the best thing to do is let the front desk call one for you. There were always drivers picking up someone else that would try and solicit their business onto you at a “cheaper rate”. And if you choose to do an excursion outside of Jalousie, the gentleman at the Excursion Desk arranges that for you. In the information binder you will find in the room, there is a page that has taxi rates to most major places on the island.
Going Into Town:
We only ventured out as far as Soufriere. We took a quick trip to grab some chips, water and a couple more underwater cameras. We had the front desk call our taxi, and our driver went every step through town right with us. He never left our side, and when a local individual offered us “a good time”, he promptly told him to bug off. He was excellent. I will say that if you are looking for trinkets and souvenirs, go to Castries. This was much more of a local fishing town than that of a tourist location.
Randolph:
I will finish up with Randolph. You can find him on the beach. There is no need for a physical description. You will know who he is. He can offer you deep sea fishing, water taxi service, a snorkel trip to Anse Chastenet, with a stop in Castries, pretty much anything you want to do. We did take him up on the deep-sea fishing. Water, Piton Beer and even some snacks were offered. Although we failed to catch anything, we were rewarded with pods of dolphins, flying fish and we even spotted a Man ‘o War jellyfish out in the deep water. Not to mention the fantastic view of our resort and island from the water.
I would recommend to anyone that they stay at Jalousie at least once in their lifetime. And go now! Once they are done remodeling the resort villas, you can guarantee that the prices are going to skyrocket. The way I see it; we paid for a spectacular view of the pitons and a secluded beach area. I’d hate to think future guests would have to shell out tons of money for a room you spend little time in anyways.
