“Beachside resturant is very good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

My wife and i visited this property for the day and enjoyed the beach very much. Wide white sand in between the magnificent Pitons it is a delight. We also had lunch at the resturant and enjoyed it very much. We both had Roti's chicken and fish and they were both delicious if a bit expensive. The service was first rate.

We just came back from 9 days at this wonderful resort. The reviews had been excellent so we went their with confidence. Ownership had recently changed to Viceroy so we knew that reviews could only get better. The Grand Luxury Villa we stayed in had an amazing view of both the ocean and the Petite Piton. The beach was quiet, with one of the best snorkelling sites right there! We did not have to go anywhere. Nathan on the beach was a great help as well as the rest of the beach staff. The food was very good, not excellent - but good. This is not a complaint, just room for improvement. The service in the Beach bar and restaurant was a little slow - but enjoyable. If anything, they need to get the wine to the table a little quicker - heard this from other guests as well. The Great Room was excellent for service and the people were all so happy to be helping you. Chad was great and Nigel kept the fun going in the Cane Bar. Lastly, our butler Monty ensured we were taken care of when we needed something special.

The Rainforest Spa is the most beautiful spa we have ever seen. The ladies who gave us our treatments were so very good at what they did and so relaxed. Try the couples massage - it is the most spectacular setting in a very beautiful rainforest.

None of my complaints are negatives, I would recommend this resort to anyone who likes peace and quiet with a beautiful location and relaxation. For the GM of the resort, with some better trained middle management the staff will become more attentive and ensure your ratings continue to be at the top. They all want to do their best as we experienced, just need some more direction.

The people visiting the resort were all relaxed, leaving you to yourself but always had a smile. We have been to many islands and this by far, at Sugar Beach, is the most beautiful we have experienced.

We will be back!

We spent sometime looking for the right resort in which to get married and we feel very lucky that we chose Sugar Beach. The location is magical, nestled between the Pitons, and from the moment we arrived we knew that this was the right place for us. We stayed for 9 nights over Christmas and New Year in one of the Grand Luxury villas in the 500's. The pullout sofa-bed in the living area and second bathroom was ideal for our 15 year-old daughter - it felt like she had her own suite.
On our first morning we were shown around the resort by our wedding planner, Marcus Joseph. He was amazing throughout our stay! We must have spent 2-3 hours looking around before choosing the spot where we would hold our wedding a few days later. Marcus made us feel very special, we never felt rushed and he made the whole experience completely stress-free. Like Marcus, we had a smile on our faces every second of our stay.
Our wedding day was simply perfect! It was just the 3 of us and we were made to feel so special by everyone involved. We had described our choice of flowers to Marcus and when they came on the morning of the wedding they couldn't have been better. We all feel that our wedding day was perfect and we wouldn't change a thing.
As a holiday destination, Sugar Beach is very special. A number of reviewers have commented on the standard of service. We felt that overall the level of service is good but that it can be improved further to make it great. The most notable area was breakfast where there was no shortage of staff but a lack of pace and efficiency. Some staff were very effective whilst others shuffled around. Also, a couple of times our food/drink orders on the beach were forgotten. On the other hand, service at dinner, particularly in the Great Room, was faultless and our butlers were great.
Sugar Beach is a magical place and we shall definitely return!

My husband and I traveled to Sugar Beach in August 2012 to celebrate our 19th anniversary. We have traveled all over the world & found this resort to be our favorite & the best. We booked a luxury villa for our stay & Molly Mallone the Marketing Director was kind & generous enough to surprise us with an upgrade to a Grand Luxury Villa for our stay. Our selected room (in the 900s) was located right in between both Pitons with a private pool & breathtaking view. I was so taken aback by the beauty & luxury that it actually made me cry--much to my husband's embarrassment! Jason was our primary butler & was so kind & accommodating. Nothing was ever too small or large & he & everyone at the resort paid attention to the small details. We booked a boat trip to shop in Castries & also went to the Sulfer Springs! Both trips were a lot of fun & the folks at Sugar Beach were so accommodating to help us book them. If you are looking for a romantic getaway without worries or cares--Sugar Beach is for you! I cannot thank the team there for everything they did to make our trip so special & memorable. We definitely will be back. Thank you again.

My husband and I visited sugar beach sept 2012 for our honeymoon. I am just getting around to writing this but have wanted to for some time now. The memories are still fresh! Upon arriving down the twisty turning road, we were greeted with a rum punch in the office area. We were brought to our gorgeous villa by the golf cart type vehicle. Which you must take up and down the windy roads on the resort. The cars come right away once you call them on your little walkie talkie device. Overall we had the most fabulous honeymoon and would love to go back sometime which we rarely say. here are some major points about our stay:

Room -
We were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a private villa with a plunge pool. We had an amazing view of the petite piton and the sunset. We swam everyday in our plunge pool mostly during the afternoon and then watched the gorgeous colorful sunset every night before dinner. The room was very clean, nicely decorated, and comfortable. We loved the bathroom with chandelier.

Weather -
Dont be fooled by weather reports (in the Caribbean in general) it said a chance of rain all 10 days we were there but it only rained maybe once during the day and sometimes at night. The weather was between 80-100f for the ten days (with humidity).

Activities -
There are lots of fun things to do to keep busy if you are the active type. We played tennis (very nice setting to play) and the tennis instructor titus was awesome! We also enjoyed playing pingpong and games in the cane bar after dinner at night. We took a paddle boat out for a little bit and did some snorkelling in the adjacent area. The spa was also amazing to visit. Its set up in the rainforest. I got a massage which was good but not deep tissue which i tend to prefer. The setting was so relaxing though definitely worth visiting.

Beach -
Gorgeous views of the pitons, clean sand, clear water and warm temps. The quality of the loungers and straw shades are unparalleled. My husband usually cant sit still at the beach for extended periods of time, but he was able to play on his laptop or read in the shade on the comfortable loungers that were almost like mini mattresses. We loved just floating around in the water.

Excursions -
We would highly recommend the sunset cruise which leaves right from the dock area. The sunset was absolute stunning and like no other. Its so wonderful to see the pitons from the vantage point of the ocean. Another day we took a private cab around soufriere and did the volcano tour, mud baths, botanical gardens and the waterfall. We had fun with the mud, but its very hot!

Food -
We were pleasantly surprised about the quality of food. We live in Boston and dine out often and thought the food was great. Some plates were better than others but generally very good. We did the breakfast/dinner meal plan and thought that was just perfect. We ate breakfast on the late side and would split a meal at lunch or eat some snacks back in our villa. On the cab ride to the hotel we actually stopped at a little grocery store and got some snacks and alcohol since there are nice large fridges to store it in. They also supplied a large bottle of water in the room everyday. Some nights they have theme dinners with live music (the band one night was soooo talented!) We didnt get sick of the food as they change the meals up on the menu.

Misc. -
The other guests at the hotel were quiet and pleasant. People were nice but we did not really hang out with anyone which was fine with us since we were there on our honeymoon. It seemed like most people just kept to themselves. I have heard of friends spending vacations at places like sandals that made loads of friends that they hung out with but we didnt get this vibe here. Also the staff was over and above accommodating and friendly. We have travelled to other places in the Caribbean and thought the people at sugar beach and st lucia in general were so warm and more sincere. Everyone went out of their way to help you and make you comfortable. We would highly recommend this place for vacation. The only down side is that theres not much to do in the nearby city if you are into visiting authentic areas off- resort. Also some people might get bored with being so isolated. We are the type that are never bored and can always find some fun but I can see how different personalities might feel isolated. Also there was a bit of construction going on when we were there, i would advise to check in about the status of that. We didnt mind it so much because we would retreat back to our villa/pool if it started to get loud down at the beach. I think they definitely compensated with the staff friendliness for the construction work. The pool was closed during our stay which was a bummer but we are still glad we chose Sugar Beach.

Have fun!

Sugar Beach is an incredible resort on a beautiful piece of property. Me and my wife spent 6 nights of our honeymoon at this resort and we cannot wait to return.

A few points:

- We stayed in a Beach Bungalow after being upgraded from a Grand Luxury Villa. At first, we were a little disappointed since we were looking forward to the hill side setting of the Villa; however, after the first few hours, we fell in love with our Bungalow. It was gorgeous. The views from our unit in the morning/evening, the convenience of the beach and the restaurants, and the private courtyard with a private pool all made this Bungalow the perfect spot for us on our vacation. I will mention it again in the room tip section, but if you are looking for privacy, you will want either Bungalow 19, 20, or 21 to give you the most. Some of the lower Bungalows are near the resort beach area. We stayed in 20 and it was perfect! In fact, we can't wait to return and stay at another Bungalow.

- The beach area was great. We placed our books on two chairs as we went to breakfast and when we returned, our chairs had towels and waters waiting for us. They give you red flags that you can place in the ground to have a staff member wait on you. We would use this whenever we needed a drink or to order lunch. The staff would bring you lunch directly to your beach chair and set it up for you. It was perfect.

- We had about 4 rotational butlers that serviced the Bungalow area. They give each unit a cell phone and you can call them whenever you needed anything. We used them to iron a few of our clothes, arrange dinner reservations, call on taxi's, and restock our mini fridge. On our last day, we were a bit rushed to the airport and the butler volunteered to close out our bill with the receptionist and bring us the receipt while we were dining at the Bayside restaurant for lunch. Very helpful.

- The dining options are fairly limited; however, they try to change the menu up often enough at the two restaurants where you don't feel like you have to order the same food items each time you dine. I would also highly suggest doing in-room dining. We did it two nights and it was wonderful. They bring you white table cloths and set up the table outside on your "patio" area (or anywhere for that matter). The in-room dining menu comes out around 6pm the day of and is very easy to place an order. Your butler can assist you with this. Another recommendation is to arrange a taxi to take you to Ladera for dinner. We did this mid week and it was great to change things up for a night.

- The management team at this resort is VERY helpful and attentive. We spoke with them a few times during our stay and they were very helpful to do whatever possible to fit our needs and concerns. Huge plus having such a top notch team on board.

All in all, we thought the resort was phenomenal. Being located right in-between the Pitons makes for an ideal beach setting. I could go on and on about how great this place is. We cannot wait to return at some point. Cheers!

Good day,
Thank you for taking the time to comment about your honeymoon stay at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort.
We are pleased to hear that you appreciated being upgraded to our highest room category and that you found your bungalow private, comfortable and perfectly located despite your original doubts.
Our butlers do go the extra mile to ensure they provide the best possible service to our guests. I am happy they contributed to making your stay extra special. I will be sure to pass on your glowing comments.
We are particular pleased that you enjoyed your dining experience but disappoint that you thought that dining options were limited. There are many dining opportunities for our guests including, the Terrace for breakfast, the Bayside restaurant for lunch and dinner, and the Great Room restaurant. We also offer lighter fare such as sushi and club sandwiches at the Cane Bar. In addition, we have a dine anywhere, anytime policy which allows guests to chose their own menu and location for their dining pleasure. We have set up dinners on our jetty, at sugar point, on the beach, on the sunset deck, and also in the privacy of our villas. I am sorry if you were not informed of these options. We will continue to review our service standards to ensure that our guests are always well informed of the dining opportunities at the resort.
Once again, thank you for your comments, recommendations and business and we look forward to your return visit.

Sugar Beach is a beautiful luxury resort with a gorgeous location. Most guests stay in private bungalows that are beautifully decorated and equipped with their own plunge pools (although most are far from the beach and restaurants requiring the use of its free shuttle service).

The property's beach and swimming pool are lovely, but it was extremely annoying that so many non-hotel guests were there; especially those who plunked their towels down on the beach in front of our chaise lounge chairs. The spa is not to be missed and is stunningly set in a rain forest in a series of Swiss Family Robinson-style huts on stilts.

The Great Room offers exquisite dining with great service in a lovely setting and the Cane Bar is wonderful with a fun cocktail menu (although sadly, it is always devoid of guests). The Bayside Restaurant was good, too, though its service and food quality were not of the level of the Great Room. Be sure not to miss the Grill Night at Bayside each Friday night.

We also loved all the live music each evening at the different parts of the hotel, as well as the local dancers and school groups who were brought in to entertain us at the beach on Sundays. This was a great way to partake in the local culture without leaving the hotel.

Our kids loved the movie nights on the beach each Wednesday night---great idea! The butlers need to do a much better job communicating the activities available to guests, though, as we felt in the dark throughout our visit and missed a few fun things we would have liked to experience.

We highly recommend the complete dining package, which includes most types of alcohol. This made our stay more relaxing (though the mini bar should absolutely be stocked accordingly with all-inclusive items.)

This resort has a few drawbacks: it is hard to get to and its remote location makes it difficult to leave to experience other parts of the island (though this is also an attribute for those happy to stay and just relax). Also, most guests have no choice but rely on the free shuttles that ferry them from their villas perched on the steep property to and from the rest of the hotel, including the restaurants and beach. Each morning, we carefully packed everything we needed for the day as it was too time consuming to return to the villa. The biggest negative is the spotty service, which ranges from amazing to really poor. We were assigned several butlers of varying levels. For example, one butler (Linus) was amazingly professional and courteous and even prepared our villa with lit candles so that when we returned during a power outage, we were able to be comfortable. Another butler, however, failed us completely by not recommending upon our arrival that we make a reservation early for New Years' Eve, which resulted in us being shut out of the restaurant of our choice.

The beach service is great (kudos to Mary and her team) as was the scuba shack and water sports staff. We had a few negative encounters with staff elsewhere on the property, though, who were sour and seemed to have disdain for the guests. A few rudely commented on some of our possessions and their inability to afford them. This really affected our experience and ability to enjoy ourselves.

The hotel should invest more in training its staff so that their level of service equals the rest of what this wonderful resort has to offer. The resident manager, George, was charming and accessible, which is a big plus. Overall, while the service is spotty, everything else is magical. We will definitely return---with hope that service will improve. Once that occurs, Sugar Beach has the potential to be considered the best resort in all of the Caribbean.

Good day,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your stay at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort.
We are very pleased to hear that you had a wonderful time however disappointed that you encountered some mishaps along the way.
We try very hard to manage non-resident guests by preparing a separate area with lounge chairs on the right hand side of the beach. However, your stay coincided with the very busy festive season, which brought more than the usual number of visitors to our beach. At times, we could see that the snorkeling area was a little congested, but unfortunately, with all beaches on the island being public, there is little we can do to limit the influx of day visitors. We continue to work with the Soufriere Marine Management Area and the Marine Police to find ways in which we can limit the number of non-resident guests brought to Sugar Beach by tour providers. The dialogue is continuing and we hope to find a solution soon.
I am sorry that there were inconsistencies in the level of service you received during your stay. This should not have been the case as all of our team members have been trained to deliver the same high level of service.
I am also disappointed to learn that on New Year’s Eve you were unable to dine in your first choice restaurant having not been informed that booking in advance was required...especially on New Year’s Eve.
Mary and her team on the beach are known for delivering excellent service. It will give me great pleasure to pass on your comments to her.
In the meantime, rest assured we will continue to review our service standards in the areas that concerned you to ensure that the best possible service is delivered to our guests at all times.
Once again, thank you for choosing Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
