My wife and I were on our honeymoon, island hopping throughout the Carib. for a month or so and instead of lush resorts, we opted for more of an "off the beaten path" approach. We chose the Hummingbird based upon the price after we landed in Castries, and to be frank, we were not disappointed. True, if you expect to have every whim catered and your caprices fulfilled, then go to Sandals or some other resort, or better yet, never leave your home in the US or Europe... but those of us who are truly "world travellers" relish the opportunity to stay somewhere with pleasant accomodations that is away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist trap areas.
Soufriere: small, quaint, and very much an island town, no real negatives aside from the two or three beggars that felt the need to continually accost us. You would think that they would remember when you tell them "no" once!! That being said, it is a great location for jump-offs to jaunts in the rainforest, to waterfalls and, of course, the Pitons.
Rooms: ours was simple, clean, with mosquito net and ceiling fan and since it was the off-season, the rates were very acceptable. The view was magnificent and to fall asleep each night to the ocean sounds was very relaxing. What it lacked in amenities, the view and the surroundings more than made up for. Again, this is not Sandals, so keep that in mind!
Service: it was the off season, not fully staffed yet it still met our needs. The staff was VERY nice and helpful; not only that, but Joyce (the owner) and her husband joined us on two nights for dinner and cocktails. She was very pleasant and any concerns, albeit very few, were adressed ASAP.
Food: We only ate at the resort for dinner three times and all three times the food was fine, not great, but good. One thing that was lacking was a full wine selection but being the off season, I didn't expect a full cellar. The town has several places to dine, and an AMAZING Chinese food rest. that is owned and operated by a Chinese family (in Soufriere, St. Lucia??). You will not run out of choices for food, and all are competitively priced.
This place is out of the way, not a first choice for a lot of people, the drive to Soufriere and beyond can cause a bit of motion sickness with the over 30 switchbacks (and fast taxi drivers), but my wife and I would stay there again.
And Joyce, by the way, your husband is right: your house is now pink, not salmon!! LOL Thank you for the wonderful time in St. Lucia.
