I did not really know what to expect upon arriving. Getting to the hotel is a shock for the uninitiated. One has to drive through town in order to get there. We arrived at dusk, and it was a bit disconcerting, but once we got to the hotel we were welcomed with open arms. We stayed in a guest suite attached to the owners house (which is on the grounds) for the first 2 nights as the resort was full (which we knew in advance). Mrs Alexander was a great hostess as well as owner of the resort. I stayed in the 2 bedroom, 2 bath cottage which is in between the owners home and the hotel (less the 1 min from the beach) The cottage was functional and relaxing if not the most luxurious. now for the hotel itself. Small, well kept, attentive staff, great setting, great views, beach right in front, rooms average (no AC except in cottage), SMALL pool, native art displays all over even a gallery ion grounds, bar was OK but more expensive then the more expensive hotels. Beach was convenient but not kept well. rocky entrance to the water. Vendors on the beach but not pushy (Mexico was AWFUL!). Overall very good value, and great staff, they even found my wifes watch and sent it back to us. I would come back again.

“Island Feel”

Hummingbird Beach Resort

My wife and I spent 2 nights at the Hummingbird; room was clean and well appointed. The resturant and bar were excellent - great food with better-than-average island service (a bit pricey). All staff were very plesant, friendly and helpful. Soufriere is a fishing village with a certain degree of poverty. Locals were friendly and even the beggar (we only encountered one) was polite when we declined his requests. You get back the attitude you give out. Supplies can be obtained in town for an evening drink of wine, rum etc. at significant savings.

There are locals enjoying themselves on the beach and I'd not leave things unattended. The beach is NOT the reason for going to Soufriere, although we did swim in the sea at each sunset without hassle. The pool was also an option.

A 20 min. stroll away was Diamond Botanical Gardens and Waterfall - open to the public for a small fee. The baths there looked awful, but it WAS generally beauitful and a nice place to stroll for an afternoon. The volcano trip was dissapointing - a few steaming puddles. We could have done other things in that area for a few more days but we wanted to see Rodney Bay area for the only other 2 days at our disposal on this trip.

Hummingbird was good value for those who do not need Sandals-type "resort" ammenities and want a peaceful "island experience" without the nightlife of more populated areas of the island. The view of the piton was a highlight.

As an extra note, we went from the airport at Vieux Fort (UVF) to Soufriere and then from Soufriere to Rodney Bay and then left from the Castries airport (SLU). The second drive has some beautiful views but is not easy if you get car sick. Going the other way would likely be worse as the windier sections are closer to Soufriere. Also, the taxi are NOT cheap in St. Lucia (by regulation)... water taxis are an option if the seas are calm.

This was an exploratory trip and all of our tests were passed so we will return to St.Lucia and the Hummingbird.

We like a small, quiet hotel and this fit the bill perfectly. Our room was comfortable and the view from out patio was spectacular. The staff was helpful and friendly, especially the wait staff. The meals were excellent. The price was excellent and included breakfast. We would definitely come back and stay at the Hummingbird.

I recently just got back from St. Lucia from my honeymoon. Although I didnt stay at the Hummingbird, I did eat at the resturant several times. I must say my wife and I ate all over the island from cheap places, to gourmet resturants. And we both agreed that the food at the Hummingbird is the islands best by far. I would even go as far as saying not to bother with some of the other resturants around unless you want to just keep ending back at the Hummingbird like we did. The fish is outstanding! The service isnt the greatest, but isn't bad. They even have live music on Wednesday nights.

“Great Rustic Resort”

My Wife and I stayed at the Hummingbird during Thanksgiving week. The Resort is quaint and rustic and is more like a B&B. Our room was a great value at $110/night. This is a no frills resort so do not expect the amenties of the tourist mega resorts up north.

We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Most of the staff was knowledgeable and courteous and helped us with directions, reccomendations and tour arrangements. The restaurant serves excellent local cuisine and yes the service is a bit slow. These folks operate on island time, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the awesome view.

The beach is not the greatest, but there are other nearby beaches that are fabulous. The town is close enough to walk to and as a result the locals can be a bit bothersome until you learn to politely tell them you are not interested. We did not feel threatened at any time and there was 24 hour security. The rooms are spartan as one would expect for such reasonable pricing. The only real negative was the mosquitos. Bring bug spray and learn how to use the mosquito netting properly as most of the rooms are open air.

We plan to return here one day and we both heartily recommend this resort to those that want a true Island experience.
