Anse Chastanet is an awesome resort with great staff and delicious food. We stayed in one of the premium rooms for our honeymoon and did the Romance Package...the room and the views were amazing. Our visit was late August 2007 about a month after a hurricane hit the island--the resort was not damaged.
Now, what to expect. Expect great service, excellent food, a terrific location and a nice beach. Also expect the sand to be molten lava hot, no air conditioning, an afternoon shower, high prices, and feeling as though you need to tip for everything. Staff does not wear buttons that say "do not tip" or treat you poorly if you do not tip, but they definitely treat you better if you do! I did feel guilty spending the kind of money we did, and tipping, when you see the people of St Lucia that are not lucky enough to work at a major resort. Also expect a hair raising, honk-full ride to/from the airport. I do suggest talking to your driver about the culture on the island...it is quite interesting. Also, don't expect tv's, radios, computers, or electronics of any sort. This is meant to be a vacation! if you go in the summer like we do, expect the weather to be really humid and for staff to go around the grounds in the evening with this loud machine putting out smoke to fend off the mosquitoes. Also, not all restaurants will be open if it is the summer months.
If you have a Premium room expect to climb some stairs. They will take you by van, but after eating 4 course meals and drinking sugar-laden drinks and Piton Beer the stairs are not a bad thing. I would recommend doing some sort of package because I feel this is the best way to really get your moneys worth. Otherwise, looking at prices might put a damper on your vacation. I would also recommend staying here for the end of a trip, not the beggining. We went to Barbados after Anse Chastanet and it was quite disappointing! I would also say that a 4-5 day stay would be perfect because of the amount of food and things that are offered. We stayed for 8 days, which was fantastic for a honeymoon, otherwise it would have been a bit long.
Last suggestion would be to have one person wait at the table while the other gets food. If you both go at the same time you will have birds dipping in your water (all creamer with an open nozzle has been hit many times) and getting all in your business. If you are lucky enough to hit one with a water pistol they act as if they have been hit with a bullet!
