“Will think twice before returning to any Sandals resort in the future.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Having been to many Sandals resorts in the past and to The Grande on several occasions We have noticed over the last couple of visits a deteriation in many aspects with regard to this resort. Many of the staff have developed attitude and don't seem to care whether they serve you or not at the bars, the food quality in the Bayside restaurant has deteriated, although there is an improvement in the Menu and atmosphere at the Italian which was long overdue. Most of the irritating things that annoy people could with a very small amount of effort on behalf of the Management be corrected.
The biggest irritation and totally cringeworthy thing that has crept into the Grande over the last few years is recognition by Sandals of "Ambassadors", American and sadly English holidaymakers who strut around the resort full of their own misguided self importance, wearing Sandals identity badges, many first time resort guests mistake these sad people for genuine Sandals employees and we have heard many complaints in the past, and some more on this trip concerning an embarrassing English couple of idiots. So get a grip Sandals you either sort these things out or as you are fond of saying " we have a choice ", sadly, we may just choose to take your advice in the future.

We went to the Sandals Grande St. Lucian for our Honeymoon, October 2012. We quickly realized upon our arrival, this place is not a five-star resort. The location and views from the property are quite stellar, however the room we booked (Grande Premium Lagoon) was comparable to an older Holiday Inn in the US. Upon arrival at the resort, they do this weird check-in process where you sit in the lobby awkwardly for an extended period of time filling out paperwork. They asked us literally 5-6 times if we had put our credit card on file for incidentals. We felt like from the beginning the staff looked past us and more as dollar signs.

We eventually made it to our room. We kicked off our shoes after traveling through the night, and were ready to absorb every moment of this much anticipated trip. For starters, we popped open the bottle of champagne placed in our room...made a couple of pours and boom, the champagne was warm. Talk about honeymoon mood killer lol. Looking back this was pretty much par for the course on our trip. This resort misses the details of a real five-star resort...like icing champagne.

The thing that surprised us most on visit to this resort was the lack of service from the employees. Generally speaking, they are lazy and you have to beg on your knees if you want something. If you approach them, don’t expect them to smile and bend over backwards trying to help you. As outliers, we had some amazing service from a couple of employees and some atrocious service from others. The best way I can describe the service at this resort is when you go to dinner with a large group of people - where gratuity is automatically included - like they could care less if your drink is empty, etc. Maybe our expectations were too high, but for a self-proclaimed five-star resort they should be bending over backwards and anticipating your needs.

On our third night at the resort, we found a note on our door from Sandals telling us the beach would be closed the following day until noon due to a photo shoot. We found it distasteful to close off the resort to people who are already there.

By this time, we were just completely over the trip. It was nothing what we expected. The property. The service. The room. The food was fair to good but not amazing. The room wasn’t clean (hair in the bathroom, dirty refrigerator, ghetto mattress). It was just this less than average place 5000 miles from home. I remember us sitting by the pool just laughing at ourselves in disbelief. At that time, we agreed would have rather spent our honeymoon sitting by the pool in Palm Springs, an hour from home.

On our fourth day, we discussed our displeasure of the property in it’s entirety with the resort. The director of guest services was very professional and really did her best to help us - granted it was a little late for us to be “wow’d” by this place. We tried to get flights out of St. Lucia to head home early. Once we discussed this with the director of guest services, she stepped up to the plate to try to make us happy. Within a day, she worked with us and got us into an highly upgraded room for our last three nights. We felt she really did go above and beyond to accommodate us. Our last three nights were the best of our trip.

A couple of joyful nuggets...our favorite things were the couples massage at Red Lane Spa. It was truly exceptional! The BEST massage I’ve ever had. We had our couples massage at this outdoor gazebo and as we were outside in this private little green area, the wind picked up and it began to rain...it was the most serene and relaxing moments of my life. We also really enjoyed renting jetskis from the guys at the end Sandals property (not affiliated with Sandals). They were fun to chat with. We took our cameras out with us on the water and got some exceptional photos of the island. Also, we played pool volleyball (guests vs. staff) which was very competitive and a lot of fun.

The resort itself has definitely seen better days. It looks tired and worn out. With a facelift, employee training or a complete overhaul of the staff, this place could have potential simply due to the location and grounds...but as of now, it left lots to be desired.

In the end, this was a $6000 honeymoon that, if we knew what we know now, we wouldn’t have spent $1000 on - seriously. If you decide to take the risk, please do your self a favor and do not go to this resort with high expectations (like we did), you’ll be disappointed. Use our experience to your advantage and choose to go somewhere else for your honeymoon. From us to you, this place is not worth it.

Room Tip: If you have to visit this place, you have to make it a $10,000+ trip and get a room with butler serv...

Sandals St Lucia Grande continues to give us a wonderful vacation.
Their service, food, rooms, grounds, and of course, premium cocktails make for a first class experience.
The Red Lane Spa is one to not miss out on.....
The best views are Beachfront overlooking Rodney Bay and the Piton Mountains, which you can climb.
Enjoy Managers and Returning guests cocktail parties, as well as, Casino night, Fire eaters, steel drum bands and an array of wonderful entertainment.
You can do it all, or nothing at all....it is all up to you, but you will have the trip of a lifetime!

Room Tip: Beachfront rooms are the most awesome to watch the most beautiful sunsets!

My wife and I were celebrating our 5 yr Wedding Anniversay for this trip in September and read the reviews about newlyweds. I think we got along better with fellow guests than we did with the staff. We fit the image of their typical young couple guests.... and were treated as just standard guests. Never experienced a true WOW factor as we read in other reviews. #1 complaint, the bedding and the pillows are not to Resort Standard. They look grande, but when you get in them, they creek and crack like they are going to fall apart... perhaps well abused from all the newlyweds?! ;)

When we arrived, we had hair in the bathtub and on the floor in the bathroom. We had to have everything recleaned when we went to explore the property. Definitely not a great start. Our lovely room overlooked the A/C compressors - granted we made a point not to be in our room much, it was an eyesore and should be placed somewhere not in a great view.

Location: considered "Far" from the airport. But hey, we planned for this and read reviews about the long transportation ride. Yes the drivers swerve and weave throughout the trip - but there are only a handful of straight roads throughout the island, and if you drive too slow, it will take all day. I was fine for most of the rides, but a few were rough depending on the time of day - your head can get a bit dizzy. The resort is quite beautiful. Open Air, hot hallways, your typical tropical destination.

Weather: GORGEOUS! We risked "hurricane season" as we know it in Florida, and found ourselves with plenty of sunshine, cool breezes, and oddly dryer air than in the "sunshine state". Hurricanes were abundant throughout the tropics, but I credit their well off shore appearance to pulling a lot of the moisture in the ocean and leaving us rain free!!

Food: Mediocre... was not impressed with all the meals. Drinks we made sure to ask for doubles or strong to make sure we got a well poured included drinks. We forked over a few extra $$ for better wines for dinner. **MAKE RESERVATIONS FOR "FANCY" DINNERS AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE!!**. We did Resort Hop to see other restaurants, and still were not than impressed over all... not bad, but not holding up to the hype we have read about.

Activities: We did just about everything you can do for free. You earn "points" if you participate in resort games to redeem at the end of your stay for various prizes. Some were pretty hilarious! We did kayaking and sailing, which were a blast on the clear blue water - we had a great breeze throughout our stay. We swam in every pool and sat in every section to enjoy the full ambiance of the property. We even rented a cabana for half a day - could have used improved service however.

We also paid for excursions we wanted to take part in - duh they aren't included as the Website states and the thousands of reviews below!!! Don't complain! We did Horseback Riding, ATV tour, and Climbed the Pitons.... I suggest truly being in shape for the 2 hour hike (climb) up the Piton. Backpack with plenty of water as well as a snack for calories. Ask the guide to sing for you at the peak (if you make it). He's Jammin! Horseback ridding was odd, some worried horses with ribs showing... yikes! You don't trot through the waterway coastline like the photos through. They drag you out there, turn you around, snap a photo (with your camera) and then drag you back in. You get harrassed by some locals to buy cheap overpriced stuff. ATVs are fun all around. We stopped by a local charcol maker and learned about the island. No locals bothered us on this trip and we got about 40 minutes to enjoy a secluded beach cove - very romantic!!

Overall, you get what you put into your experience. Pack extra Sunscreen!! If I could put in more friendly and customer service driven staff, we would have had the time of our lives! We enjoyed all that we could make out of our stay... our Stay is 5 Stars, but the resort is a 3 Star ranking from our experience.

Warmest Regards,

Your Secret Shopper

We went for a 10 day honeymoon the first 2 weeks of November. St. Lucia is a wonderful island. I felt safe, the people were kind and really want you to know they love tourists. I would go back to St. Lucia in a second. Everywhere we went there was fantastic views. It is an untouched island and has not been commercialized.

I will be honest about the resort since I relied on trip advisor not only to book the place but for advice on what to do while we were there. I thought it was good to be prepared for things so we didnt miss out on things or get annoyed by stuff we couldve just avoided.

We had a Penthouse Honeymoon Beachfront Concierge Room in building 5. We loved the room. We had a great view everything was close still. We had amazing views of the beach. We had breakfast in our room twice and loved sitting out on the balcony. The room was beautiful, we had a full bar and always stocked fridge. Sometimes you had to call to get more but they always brought it. And really we only ran out of water and juice. The bathroom was adverage. Nothing to call home about. It was a bit dated but it was always restocked with towels. We did have to call for soap and washclothes once but they came right down. My advise to sandles would be to invest in steps or step stools. The bed was high and the tub was hard to get into. Im not short either.

Concierge was worth it. We did not realize this till we saw check in line later that week. We were spoiled and taken right from our car to the concierge VIP check in. We were told to have a seat and while we chatted with other new arrivals they did everything for us. We were given punch then escorted to the room. We booked our reservations and they handled our excursions. My one complaint was they did not have our information on the excursions and both times sorta gave us attitude we did not have the confirmation with us. So advice would be to make sure you have your infomration on excursions (including private transfers if you got that). Also food service was bad, not worth waiting the hour for it to get to you. I didnt know till half was into the trip you can ask the resteraunts for things to go and they wrap it up and send you away with it. So much easier! We waited an hour for steak sandwhiches only to get one with only bread and cheese! It was funny but i bit annoying to have to wait 30mins for the replacement.

Food was OK. I was a bit disapointed. I even was prepared for OK food since i read alot of reviews, but it was more disapointing then I expected. We ate at bayside buffet a lot. It was good for breakfast and a quick lunch. But on our first day i noticed the birds! Which I understand are not controllable but you can controll what they have access too. All the salad, fruit, spreads, toppings were just left open. I saw a bird walking across the peanut butter, drinking out of glasses, picking at the fruit table. It was gross. I know the presentation would not be the same but if they were covered I wouldve been happier. I did not go near that table. I found it nasty. We chose the Grande due to the selection of bars/ resterautns. I was disapointed that they were not all open all day and Gordons you had ot pay extra. We did pay extra for Gordons and were very upset how much it was the same as other resteraunts. Service was great there but the food was only OK. Unless your butler and its included I wouldnt bother. Our meals were very simlar to the french resteraunt. Our favorite was La Toc and Kimonos and the La Toc resort. Worth going to. The Pub was the best at our resort we always went there at 5pm when they opened for some snacks. You have to order 2 of things like wings or onion rings but it was fine. They were very fun there. Best dessert was the crepes at Josopheses! Drinks were great, and bartenders were friendly. I wish they had more bars. They had the pool bar, and the beach bar which were basically the only two open all week. In the main building there was a bar in the lobby but he did not open till 2pm and then the last few days of our stay it was closed which was a pain. Also they had a paino bar but it was not open every night or at all during the day. The pub did not open till 5pm which sucked, i loved it in there. I think people wouldve really appriciated a place to drink inside to cool off during the day.

The beach was awesome. I do wish they had more shaded spots though. No one used the canopys for rent. You had to pay extra and they were right on top of eachother. I think it wouldve been awkard to have one. If they were more spread out I wouldve considered it. But we did always find a spot after a while and had no problems getting towels. My biggest complaint, and one that would probably lead me to going to a differnt resort next time with a private beach was the vendors. They would not stop trying to sell stuff, I think i said no thankyou and average of 15times an hour. One man handed me a rose he made from palm leaves. I said no thank you but i insisted I take it and said how it was a gift and he meant no disraspect. However when i said thank you and walked away he bashed me for not tipping. I was in a small bathingsuit with no bag, did he think i had money? He even wanted me to go back to the room to get him some. We also caved to a vendor went parasailing with the Yellow Boat. I thought they were great till the end. On the boat they drove close to the beach ropes yelling at the guests of sandles screaming "yelllow boat, no white boat!" They were pointing and yelling at the people and not in a happy fun way, but in a rude way. I was so emabarrased to be on the boat. So the experience was good, but maybe try to white boat. Not Sandles fault but still part of the experince I didnt like.
The resort included water sports. We loved the hobbycat, the paddle boards and kayaks. When we got board we took one out! They team they had over tehre was informative and friendly. I really enjoyed this part of the resort.
They through some nightly events which I wish there was more of. We loved the BBQ beach party. Best meal I had all week! They had a honymooners things which was cute and they gave away prizes. They went all out for halloween while were there and performed and decorated the pool room as a graveyard. They had one night where they had a steal drumb band and another night with dancing and rfire show. Their chocolate bar was very awesome, althoughat 11pm was a bit late. We had a big day both tuesdays we were there doing excursions and we missed the first one and had to drag ourselves to the second one. But it was worth it.
Overall the trip was good, Sandles was an average honeymoon destination. We may go back for anouther trip, but I think we will try another resort chain first to compare first. I think anyone who goes will leave happy. Here are a few tips for if you already planned your trip. 1) Get crepes at Josophenes. 2) The spa has included for guests the hot tub and cold plunge pool. Its so private and beautiful in there. It was so nice to just hang out back there and relax, I wish we found it earlier in our trip! Also they have a steam room which was interesting. 3) If at Grande travel to La Toc for french resteraunt and/or Kimonos. Best meals all trip. 4) Order 2 of appitizers. 5) We did Joe Knows tour, zip lining and ATV tour. We had a blast on those. It was worth every dime we spent on it. 6) based on reviews we booked a private transfet to hotel. It was very nice but Im not sure we needed it. The road was not as bad as people said and every driver that either was booked through sandles or staff of sandles were great drivers. We took the shuttle back and were fine. All drivers gave history of St. Lucia. 7) if you have time hike Pigon Island. It was so beauitful to visit the Forts. We paid $6 each to get into the park and got some of the best pictures of the trip. Just bring a bag with water and where sneaks. Some of the locals were either barefoot or in flip flops...i dont get how they did it. We hike and walk alot at home and I found it to at least need sneakers. 8) The locals try to speak politics with you. We went during election time in America so maybe this is the reason, but let just say they all seem to be democrate, which is great, however we are not which only . And they tried to pick debates. I was on vacation and although interested in the results at home I had no interest in debating them while getting strapped up for parasailing or driving to a differnt resort. So if you are not interseted in this discussion just nod and try to avoid the convo. It was a bit annoying. However it was intersting to see how involved they were in Amereica's politics and nice to see they cared. It just happened a lot and was a bit uncomfortable at times. 9) Go on tours, see the island. It is a beauitiful and safe place. Loved St. Lucia.

I have wanted to try a Sandals resort for several years but always found them a little higher than most. This time, when I priced out the options, Sandals came out on top because scuba diving is included in the price. The resort is beautiful, the staff is amazing always smiling and making sure you have everything you need. Lots of restaurant options. I was quite impressed with the dive centre; the staff was very professional, the boat left on time and the diving was better than expected. Special thanks to St. Rose, Romanus, Pamela, Natalia, Hiram and Captain Martin at the dive shop for ensuring that our dive experience was first class.

The only minor issue we had was with the lighting in the rooms. We found it to be very dark and would have preferred brighter lighting. Also the elevator in our building was out for several days.

We went here for our 20th anniversary and had a great time. High end all inclusive. The St Lucian stafff were warm and friendly and really cared that you were having a good time. Kuko's especially to Sherry at the Culinary desk for her help. We did diving, golf, kayaking, boat tour, Pidgeon Island, and the Gors Islet Jump-Up street party. Great place for honeymooners.
