Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation over New Years on St. Lucia. I would say the overall trip ranks among one of the best vacations I've taken. My boyfriend and I travelled with another couple and stayed at the Village Inn and Spa. We made the best of our trip, but the accomodations were one of the downfalls of the trip.
The staff is not very friendly, and as other reviewers have stated, you will have to schedule tours, trips and dinner reservations yourself, because they are generally not interested in helping you. The hotel is across the street from the beach, so there are no beach views. The pool is nice, but the hot tubs aren't very hot (one is actually cold, the other luke warm). We only ate breakfast at the hotel, which is decent for a free buffet, but nothing special. I would definitely recommend eating outside of the hotel.
The bar closes at 11:00 pm, so if you're looking to party later, you'll have to find somewhere else to do it. But all of that was okay, because we are a fairly adventurous group. We planned things ourselves and made them happen. One day we rented a car and drove to Soufriere to hike the Gros Piton, and visit the Sulfur Springs and the volcano. Driving was very challenging, and not recommended for the faint of heart. My boyfriend was able to negotiate the hairpin turns, drainage ditches, and oncoming traffic with narrow lanes fairly well, but it was definitely an adventure. Do not expect it to be a relaxing ride on the island.
Saint Lucians are generally very friendly. If you venture outside of Gros Isles, be prepared to witness some fairly disturbing poverty. Many of the small villages can nearly be classified as shanty towns.
The natural beauty of the island is engrossing. St. Lucia offers many activities besides for simple beach lounging. We were impressed by the snorkeling in the Marine Park and we all made it up Gros Piton- a very challenging 2 mile hike up to 2619 feet in elevation! Do not embark on this hike if you are not physically fit. I found it to be extremely challenging, and I work out 4 days a week. But the view and the satisfaction of making it to the top, make it worthwhile.
Fireworks on the beach New Years Eve were lovely. And we partied at the Lime afterwards for some dancing. The restaurants were generally very good food, but somewhat overpriced. I would definitely recommend Ku-De-Ta, with a lovely atmosphere and delicious food. The Red Snapper was also very good. I would not recommend Castaways, generally overpriced bar food.
I would enjoy a return trip to Saint Lucia because there are so many activities outside of beach lounging (which I happen to be a big fan of). There's plenty of hiking, in the rainforest and up the peaks, great snorkeling and scuba, and boat trips around the island and to other islands.
Overall the stay at the Village Inn was decent, considering an attempt to be fiscally responsible. The rooms are clean, and the beds are comfortable. The bathrooms are definitely small, and tthe showers tiny. But we were not there to lounge in our hotel rooms and relax resort style. I would not recommend the Village Inn and Spa for that type of vacation, there are plenty of gorgeous resorts on the island that would provide an indlugent experience if you're willing to pay the price.
