My husband and I just came back from Sandals Grande St. Lucia on our honeymoon. We had a great time overall: the location was gorgeous, the weather held up despite it being St. Lucia's rainy season and our travel agent not telling us that! Most of the staff treated us excellent as well with their "No Pressure, No Problem" attitude.
We had very high expectations going in with the "all-inclusive" resort, but come to find out there were some things that didn't please us.
For one, there was a long drive from the airport to the resort - we knew this going in and were okay with it, however, the shuttle bus drivers that bring you to the resort tend to drive a little crazy. There are lots of twists and turns in the road and you never go straight longer than a mile. The drivers tend to take a turn going 70 MPH that would have been marked a 20 MPH zone. I, for one, have horrible motion sickness and if it weren't for the medication I had already taken for the plane ride, I would not be in good shape. My husband, who never gets motion sick, was incredibly sick. They also zoom up to stops and slam on their breaks. It's quite frustrating. This has nothing to do with the resort, I believe they contract with shuttle/taxi companies to bring their guests.
We finally got to the resort and they had champagne and cool towels waiting for us which was really nice after the nightmare ride we were just on. This was because we paid for a concierge level suite. Once we got to the room, there was an ice bucket with champagne waiting for us with a congratulatory message on our marriage surrounded with flowers. Also really special.
One thing we were incredibly disappointed about was when they told us that they don't sell calling cards anywhere on the resort, which was another thing that our travel agent neglected to tell us, in fact, she told us the opposite. We looked on our phone instructions next to the phone which told us it was $4 per call. We made calls not thinking about it and come to find out, it's $4 on top of $3.25 per minute which was listed on the back of the card, with no "see back of card for more information." At the end of our honeymoon we had a $400 phone bill. They took off $100 and got us a free taxi to another Sandals resort because we had to cancel our reservations at Gordon's (the non-inclusive restaurant on the resort) because we couldn't afford it.
The most important thing that we were disappointed about was really the food. I understand, I'm from NY, we have really great food here, so we're a little spoiled in that regard. The all-inclusive food was not that great. In fact, some of it was outright terrible. The food that was not included and the food off the resort was amazing. We went to The Chart House one night and it was great. We also had a romantic dinner on the beach on the resort which was somewhere in the price range of $200. Extremely expensive, but the food was pretty good and so was the ambiance.
Another thing was the drinks. I think we were expecting to go to the Caribbean and get some amazing looking drink in a cool glass with fruit hanging out the side, that wasn't true. It was served in a plastic, ugly glass with no fruit. In fact, the strawberry daquiri and pina coladas came out of a machine. Some days they were much stronger than others. They also have a limited wine collection. I drink white so for me they had chardonney and pino grigio, both pretty dry. It wasn't until we got to the Chart House where I was finally able to get a cool looking drink. Honestly, Pizzeria Uno makes better looking and better tasting drinks and that doesn't say much.
We did a couple's massage outside which was pretty relaxing. I felt wonderful afterward, but my husband's neck bothered him for a couple day's after. The whole thing is a big up-sell, they're pretty persistent for you to come back and have more done and buy more products. You have to be really assertive.
We left the resort a couple times and one of the times we went to the market. Not a good experience. Some of the people were very pleasant and interesting to talk to, others wanted to sell us "ganga." I would not go here alone, that's for sure. Some of the people and areas are pretty sketchy. We could smell people smoking pot on the street even though it's totally illegal there. They will try their hardest to sell you something there and if you want it, bargain with them, but know that they will try their hardest to come at you with some ridiculous price and you just have to knock them down to something reasonable.
We stayed at the Grande and honestly if we had to do it all over again, I think we would go to the Halcyon, which is supposed to be really quiet. We went there for dinner one night and enjoyed it. The Grande reminds me of MTV Spring Break and we're not really like that. I can only imagine how intimidating it might be for an older couple. The majority of the couples there were in their 20's. Luckily for us, we had a swim-out room and enjoyed our quiet pool. Also, the nightlife was not that great as mentioned in previous reviews. The majority of the time we were there, they had "Disco Night." It felt like disco night was every night. The music is really loud from the resort too. Our room was pretty far away and we could still hear it.
One last thing and I will end this very long review... There are tons of bugs there. You just have to be comfortable with the fact that flies are going to land on your food. Also, I have allergic reactions to mosquito bites and still have large bumps all over my legs. At the end of the trip, I had over 20 bites on my body. And I used bug spray. You also have to be comfortable with birds flying everywhere. They are used to people, so they all over walking right next to you, eating your food as soon as you get up or drop something (sometimes before it even lands), and flying right past your head. It's pretty scary sometimes.
Honestly you have to see the Caribbean once in your life. Would I go here again? Probably not. Would I go there if I know what I know now? Probably not. I would probably go to the Halcyon or another island. People are going to say, "People just like to complain." That's not true. When you're spending thousands of dollars, you better enjoy it. There were some aspects of the trip which were worth it, others, not so much. I care about other people and care about them spending money on something they enjoy.
