The Villa Beach Cottages met all of our wishes for accommodation for our vacation on St Lucia. It is very close to Castries but Rodney Bay is also very accessible. We rented a car through the hotel. The beach and bay were perfect. The view from our second floor balcony was wonderful. We kayaked to the small island just off the shore one afternoon and was able to look back at the cottages from the water - beautiful!
The cottage was generally clean and stocked with kitchen necessities. Super J grocery stores are abundant to self-service meals at the cottage. Our unit looked exactly like the pictures on the website including the small uncomfortable couch and single chair. The balcony was more comfortable than the living area inside.
There is no AC unit for the living room so you either froze in the bedrooms so you could stand to sit in the living room or you sat outside on the balcony. There were lovely breezes, just not enough to cool the living area even with the front door and all the windows open. The wireless WiFi signal was very weak and the cable went out the last 2 days of our stay. The desk clerk was most helpful answering all our questions - we did not meet with "Mr. Hunt" the manager as it seemed he was only in the office from 9:30 am - 1 pm and we were out and about during those times. We had been told that "Mr. Hunt" would go over all our options but with his limited schedule and the helpfulness of the desk clerk we didn't miss him. The restaurant next door called The Wharf appeared to be closed and there are no restaurants or shopping within safe walking distance - you could walk but there are no sidewalks and a lot of traffic! The cottages are located on a main and busy road. The traffic noise could be heard occasionally but it wasn't obtrusive. At night all we heard was the waves.
We were concerned that since it was just down the beach from a Sandals resort our beach area would be crowded but we rarely saw more than 4 or 5 other people on the beach all day (this was in early June, shoulder season).
My daughter & I traveled separately from my husband and when his plane was delayed the hotel arranged for a taxi to pick him up from the airport (90 minutes away) later that night. When my husband arrived he told me he had to pay $80 for the taxi trip. We spoke to the front desk clerk because I had specifically asked her if I needed to pick up my husband since we had rented a car through the hotel or if they would provide transportation for him. There was a miscommunication and she believed my daughter and I would not want to make the 3 hour round trip at night to pick him up - however she didn't phrase her response in that manner she just said the hotel had arranged for a taxi to pick him up. So we pointed out to her that we were not aware the taxi was going to cost us $80 and she needed to be more up front what the hotel's "services" were going to cost. She agreed to get us a discount on the taxi trip and later she did not charge us for the kayak rental. Laundry service was $5/load to wash and $5/load to dry. A little expensive but they have a captive market. Laundry soap, however, was provided.
We rented the basic car and the vehicle we got was very small 4-door 'Spark'. At least it was an automatic transmission. It had a loose belt that squeaked and a bearing going out that roared. It was severely underpowered for the hilly roads but it got us around the island twice. If we had to do it again we would pay extra for a 4 wheel drive vehicle if just for the security of mind on the steep roads especially some of the side roads we took to the Gros Piton.
We had a Groupon Discount for the Villa Beach Cottages so we got an Ocean view room for the price of a non-view room. Overall it was a good value and the service was good. It is a beautiful location and it had everything we wanted.
