First off, we have holidayed in the Caribbean for the last five years, we have travelled with Virgin on more than one occasion and we have stayed at a 3* Rex Resort before.
Outward flight - satisfactory, only glitch was part of the meal had cheese with it, as my wife is allergic to cheese (notified to Virgin) therefore she did not receive a full meal. This was irritating rather than a problem as she could leave the cheese to one side.
The hotel - this hotel has gone passed its sell-by date, I'm afraid.
The room we occupied had a smell from the drains in it from the first moment water was sent down the plug hole of the wash basin, it was as if some drain monster had been rudely awakened!! It wafted through the room every time water was sent down the drain. I have a strong constitution (it goes with my job) but my wife was made to feel sick by the smell.
Also, the provided hairdrier in the room did not function.
Both of these matters were politely brought to the attention of the hotel management.
The smell was not rectified, but the maid was told to use plenty of freshener in our room to mask the smell. Fine when the room was empty but once the water in the drains was disturbed, well need I say more.... Maintenance were despatched to remedy the hairdrier. He came he looked, he left - and it remained non-functioning throughout our stay.
We informed our Virgin rep of the 'little local difficulties' he of course was not happy that they had not been sorted but alas was impotent in his attempts to get them remedied.
The food - We've had much better. It reminded me of school dinners it was that kind of institutionalised catering. There were 2 BBQ evenings during our stay - the first was excellent, no problems apart from the drinks being slow to be brought to the table. The 2nd however was a different story, it was chaos. Table set up outside only partly set, no staff on hand to guide guests as tot he format of the evening. It was breezy so the table cloth kept trying to set sail and you had to eat your food in weight order - lightest first - the lettuce was decidedly difficult to pin down!!
Some evenings the food was poor to say the least - the carvery for Thanksgiving Night, was just thrown into the middle of your plate.
Breakfast was consistently good and plentiful.
The lunchtime grill - this was waitress service when we arrived, all very relaxed in the usual Caribbean way - no problem. The grill got a bit busy and the waitress was struggling to cope with all her duties. The answer the management came up with - put on extra staff? Not likely!!! Make it SELF-SERVICE!! Even the waitress (who sole job was now to clear tables and fetch drinks) was dismayed at this action!!!
The grounds - very pretty, plenty of shade, well maintained by a friendly and knowledgeable gardening staff.
Buildings – are not maintained, rainwater goods are missing, roofs leaking (making shiny tiled floors slippy tiled floors), plumbing problems, drainage problems – near the car park area I witnessed several sections of drains being rodded (unfortunately for us we were not sleeping in or near the car park!!)
I believe there to be apathy or a malaise among the management of this hotel which is showing itself in the demeanour of some of the middle management and frontline staff. One example, at dinner one evening we gave our drinks order to the waitress as usual, some twenty minutes later she appeared with the drinks, very apologetic as the bar staff had to go to another bar on the complex to get a corkscrew!!!! That for me just summed up the ‘Heath Robinson’ nature of this hotel.
I got the feeling that Rex Resorts have been screwed so tight by the tour operators that they cannot deliver the service demanded by their guests. This, if true, is such a shame as the location of this hotel is stunning. The hotel needs a facelift; it is decidedly saggy around the edges. The staff needs motivating to be interested in the service they provide.
Return journey – could not really be faulted – just that cheese formed part of the salad for the meal on the plane – promptly changed when brought to the attention of the cabin crew – but I feel I should not have had to tell them having already notified Virgin when booking the holiday.
Overall – disappointing - after all we work very hard throughout the year to afford our week or so in the sun, the least we can expect is to get decent service. This was the dearest holiday in the Caribbean we have had and the most disappointing.
