Saturday morning is the day to visit Castries Market. That is when the locals do their shopping - they are there early so if you want to be there at the peak of the frenzy go early. And if you are lucky enough to be there when there are no cruise ships, it is all the more authentic (no monstrous floating structures in sight).
There are two sides to the market. The tourist trap side is evident and not that much fun unless you are shopping for souvenirs (it is the place to do it as you will find the cheapest prices on the island). The more enjoyable side is the food vendors - produce, spices and fish. It is here that you can get an appreciation of the different foods, flavours and the people of Saint Lucia. If you like spices, you will find all kinds of great deals. Don't miss out on the raw cacao sticks if you are a fan of chocolate.
I must say, I had more fun walking and looking than shopping.
