“Go to the market on Saturday morning”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

Saturday morning is the day to visit Castries Market. That is when the locals do their shopping - they are there early so if you want to be there at the peak of the frenzy go early. And if you are lucky enough to be there when there are no cruise ships, it is all the more authentic (no monstrous floating structures in sight).

There are two sides to the market. The tourist trap side is evident and not that much fun unless you are shopping for souvenirs (it is the place to do it as you will find the cheapest prices on the island). The more enjoyable side is the food vendors - produce, spices and fish. It is here that you can get an appreciation of the different foods, flavours and the people of Saint Lucia. If you like spices, you will find all kinds of great deals. Don't miss out on the raw cacao sticks if you are a fan of chocolate.

I must say, I had more fun walking and looking than shopping.

“Go to buy spices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

This is a local market. Yes, they have t-shirts and kitschy tourist items. Yes, at the Saturday market they have a lot of locals and sell basic items including clothing that they use. Yes, there is fruit that will never see mainland US. What they do have in abundance in the covered market (mostly on the right hand side) is spices. They have bags of spices - fresh nutmeg (to crack), cinnamon to bake, safron, massala, Caribbean pepper spice, and cocoa sticks. A reasonable price for each bag is currently about $2 each US. They have them in the separate bags and in baskets. This is the true flavor of the Caribbean and is why I like to go to the market. The people are also very friendly and speak English.

“Not impressed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

I may have just had my expectations too high but the trip down the Castries in my opinion was just a waste of time. Nothing down there is authentic, its all mass produced or bought from a different local store and then sold to tourists for a profit.

“Great atmosphere but a bit tacky”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

Loved the atmosphere, particularly as we went on a Saturday morning when the vendors are all out on the street. All very friendly and not at all threatening, which I had heard. Really enjoyed wandering around the stalls, particularly the fruit and vegetables part. Didn't really find anything much to buy except for a t shirt for our son. Do barter, it's expected!

“Another market - lots of touristy stuff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

Not much to say here, its another typical market, lots of touristy stuff and lots of local areas too. If you really like markets or haven't seen many before then go - if you're more of a been there done that kind of person, then don't bother :). Castries is really hectic btw!
