The Candyo is a friendly budget style hotel/motel just a 10 minute walk down a two-lane road lined with restaurants in a touristy area of Rodney Bay -- to the beautiful beach in Rodney Bay. Our two room "suite" had a suitably equipped kitchen, tile floors, and was a real bargain compared to the many all inclusive places along the beach. Management and staff very friendly. The hotel front desk was open till 11 PM only -- important to know if you need something in the night. There was a security guard on premises, (posted at the front door) all night, so safety was not an issue --- but, this is not the kind of place you can "call down to the desk" for a toothbrush at midnight. A teeny tiny bar and a medium sized pool are out back. Yes, the pool needed painting (black spots from rubbed away blue paint) but, it was VERY clean, and the water just right, so this was no bother. This is located in a fenced grassy yard area with lush flowers/greenery around -- lots of privacy from nearby buildings, so it was very much like "hanging out" at your backyard pool! Chairs & Towels provided -- though bring your own beach towels for heading to the beach. The woman at the bar outside on a patio near the pool also made sandwiches and a small selection of items -- there was a small restaurant consisting of a few tables -- Nice for breakfast or a snack. Great Rum punches!! While we mostly spent time at the beach, it was nice to have a pool, and relaxing in the yard was nice "down time". This is a BUDGET option, so there are certainly issues. Our first night, the A/C did not work, and it was HOT. St Lucia is quite near the equator, and doesn't cool down at night even in January like some Caribbean areas. (Except for in the more mountainous regions near Pitons, for example) So, that night was spent with a pot of cold water near the bed so we could cool off with a washcloth! The next day, the A/C was fixed. Also, there was spotty water pressure -- once or twice we lost water pressure during a shower. If you are used to budget traveling, and don't mind a few minor inconveniences in exchange for a great rate in a nice area -- these will seem like minor inconveniences. This is NOT for honeymooners I wouldn't think, or for someone looking for a "once-in-a-lifetime" no expenses spared trip. But, if you want to cut down your expenses on EACH trip, so that you can have MANY. .. then the Candyo is a good option. Overall, we felt very comfortable there, and thought it charming in it's way. It's nice to use tourism dollars for locally owned properties as well. Walking to the beach was about 10 minutes or so. (Hot, Hot Hot!!!) Once there, there is plenty of open access and there are several beach bars & restaurants, and you can rent chairs/umbrellas, etc. There are enterprising locals who will bring you cold beers even. So, just because you are staying up the road and not directly ON the beach -- you don't have to miss out on the amenities of a generic "all-inclusive/all-exclusive", like a beach chair or umbrellas. We stayed at Ladera (very upscale) for a portion of our trip, and saved money (so we could splurge at Ladera!) at Candyo while at Rodney Bay. We felt it was exactly what we expected for the money and would recommend it to someone looking for budget accommodations!!! It's very quiet, with nightlife hopping just down the street at some of the hotels, and a few bars. In my opinion, the area of Rodney Bay seems very "compact" and is relatively quiet /and small compared to other more developed Caribbean islands' hubbub "centers". We would HIGHLY recommend visiting other areas of the island as well as St Lucia is beautiful.
