Visiting an active volcano is always an interesting experience, we visited La Soufriere Volcano and enjoyed the view and the time. Our recommendation is to request an international drivers license before your trip in order to be able to rent a vehicle and do your own driving. Keep in mind that in ST Lucia the driving is done on the left and the vehicles have the steering wheel on the right, totally opposite to the states, however, the driving is easy since there is only one road to the volcano and the botanical gardens and the same road back to the cruise port. The rental place is very friendly and will provide you with a map and good directions to the volcano.
The advantages to do your own driving are:
1. It's cheaper to rent a vehicle (we shared the rent with other couple and came up to around $20 each couple)
2. Will not spend the whole tank of gas during the trip. I added $10 of gas on the car before return and it was enough.
3. You have the freedom to stop at any of the nice views along the road to make any purchases of souvenirs and also to take excellent panoramic and family photos. ( some of the tour guides also stop along the road at good spots, lookout for them and stop).
