“Nice hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2012

After more than 10 years I got the opportunity to return to St Barths. I was truly amazed about the changes in Gustavia and the island in a whole. I traveled with some friends and we booked the Tropical Hotel in St Jean as we got a good price. The hotel is very small but the grounds are beautiful. It's a real charming place. There is no restaurant at the hotel but a continental breakfast is included in the price and you can purchase extra items from the menu. The rooms are on the small side, they are good for a couple on a romantic getaway. There is a small refrigerator in the room and that is very convenient for drinks. The small television only has 9 or 10 channels. As others have mentionned, the hotel is on a steep hill and there is construction going on next door. We were out all day so did not witness the noise level during the day. When we got back around 5 pm it was always quiet. The hotel is located a few steps from a small shopping center with a few restaurants but I would recommend renting a car and exploring the entire island. St Barths is a very expensive island so be prepared to spend a lot of money on food (lunch/dinner). Gustavia is very busy at night and the restaurants are often times full. All in all we had a good time and would certainly return to St Barths and the Tropical Hotel in the near future.

We stayed here one night before staying at Guanahani for 3 nights. After a very rough ferrry ride from St Maarten We slept very well here. The bed was extremely comfortable and the breakfast was really good. The room itself was small, quiet, clean and basic. One thing to note is that there is construction going on at 2 neighboring properties which is very loud in the Morning and Afternoon. The view is also now limited due to the Villa being built next door. The hotel was good for an evening but dont expect luxury.

Room Tip: Away from the construction

We were very pleased with our stay at Tropical Hotel in St. Jean, St. Barts. The hotel is located up a fairly steep hill above St. Jean beach with easy access to the beach, shopping and restaurants. Our package included a bay view and a car. While the hotel is nice enough and the location is nice the staff at the hotel is what made our stay so enjoyable. Thanks to Lolita for her help and suggestions!

While on a recent sailing trip, the 3 women look a break for a 2 day stay at the Tropical. The road directly up to the hotel was under major repair so taxis did not want to take us there. No problem , the staff picked us up at the dock and continued to provide us with rides to Gustavia (the hotel is in St Jean). The rooms are tidy and attractive with a nice pool. Breakfast is included (bread, coffee, juice) and served on the porch. A lovely break, a great location with the shopping area much less expensive and a nice variety of stores.

Very good location, not to large but clean room and a wonderful bed. Prices on St. Barts are high, this hotel is more affordable but still expensive for budget travellers.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2009

We stayed at the Tropical Nov 2-9th 2009. We Loved this little hotel. It was our first time in St Barth's, so we don't have alot of experience, but we certainly had a great time our first time over. The hotel is very clean and the grounds maintained perfect. The maid service (thank you to Ilda {sp?} our maid who left us a fresh flower daily) is great. The continental breakfast (free) with fresh rolls and croisants, jam and strong coffee - a perfect start to each day. All the receptionists were very helpful, but a big thank you to Jenny - we loved her and she made our stay so very comfortable. The location was perfect for us. St Jean is a busy place, and offered everything we needed. A grocery story, gas station, a gorgeous beach. The beach is a short walk down the steep driveway (seems longer that 40 yards advertised), but is literally across the street. Eden Rock Hotel (only a nice drink one night for our budget) is just down the road. The bar in the Tropical is very nice too. The receptionist's double as bartenders - so try not to order a fancy cocktail concoction - you just might end up with a double shot of something or other that was not quite what you expected. We loved it! We made new friends in the bar pre-dinner excursions. All very friendly, very nice. We had a garden room and also were not disappointed. The garden was lush and green and we had a turtle outside our door one day snacking away at a beautiful red flower. The king size beds are 2 large twins combined tightly together, but it was comfy enough for us. If I had to say one disappointment it was the shower. We looked forward to nice long showers, but the shower head should be replaced and we did run out of hot water very quickly - 4-5 minutes in. Probably set that way specifically to save water. The pool was small, overlooking the ocean, but we were there for the beaches/ocean, not the pool. I would have no problem staying at this hotel again, and we will definitely choose St Jean again for our location to stay in.

I would recommend this hotel to those looking for a decent hotel in an excellent location. The hotel is a short walk up a STEEP hill, directly behind the Eden Rock Hotel. In fact, I spent most of my time on the beach directly in front of Eden Rock while paying 210 Euros per night. This is a much better value than most properties around the island.

Tropical's staff is very friendly and willing to help out with car rental, island activities and dinner reservations. You can even choose to have breakfast delivered to your patio instead of on main hotel terrace.

TIP: Stock up on bottled water and white wine at the supermarket, as the hotel rooms have an ensuite refridgerator.
