I took a day trip via ferry from Antigua to Montserrat with D&J Forwarder Tours. This trip is currently only available on Thursdays. The cost is $150 US, which includes ferry, lunch and guide. If you have not been on a ferry in the Caribbean, be prepared and take Bonine before you travel, it you are not used to choppy (sometimes very) conditions. The ferry which was supposed to be a high speed ferry (and a 1-hr journey), but was, and I was told, has not been in regular operation since it's purchase, required us to take the Caribe Queen, a Nevis based ferry (2-hours, great crew). This is so typically Caribbean, the "modern" does not work regularly, but the old "war horse" chugged through the sea, slower and with much more chop. When you get to Montserrat you clear customs and we were greeted by our local guide Mr. Lee (aka Fumbo). Fumbo has lived his entire 70 years on the island and knows everyone. His knowledge of history and current issue is great. First stop, lunch. We had lunch at a wonderful tiny Caribbean restaurant. The food was excellent, the ginger beer, best I have ever had!
Although it has been >20 years since the volcano erupted and caused most of the island to be engulfed in ash, the devastation is still unbelievable. I cannot adequately describe the devastation and how vast the destruction, it is something you need to experience in person. Fumbo took the time and was patient showing us everthing, allowing us to trek through closed areas, and also had pre-eruption photos to illustrate the devastation. This is one day trip I did not know how it was going to shake out, I was very pleased and highly recommend going to Montserrat.
