“Awesome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2012

Just returned from our trip to Montserrat. Very beautful island. The ferry trip over can be of some difficulty for those who have not spent any time at sea. (minor seasickness by some tourists when we did go, none for us though.) This is a British colony, as such the flavour and impact on the island is quite evident. People are super friendly and outgoing, we had probably the best tour guide on the island with a great sense of humour and very informative. The volcano was the highlight of course. It was really awe inspiring, the devastation was immense and showed how really insignificant we little humans really are, it was still smoking when we were there, the smell of sulphur still hangs in the air. Hundreds of burned out homes still remain in the exclusion zone, really erie sight. Very expensive island, Lucky Charms double box was $75 EC. Immigration folks are very through though, they retained my Bic lighter on my return. We are not planning on returning as there is really not alot to do after a one day tour. Strongly suggest it for a once in a lifetime excursion to see how nast Mother Nature can be. No regrets.

“A visit to Pompeii”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

Travel south across the Belham valley, walk through some of the houses, take lots of pictures and leave the items intact for others to enjoy.

What an attraction! You can't grasp it's size (or the devastion) until you are there - and standing next to the top floor of a 3 story house.....

“Interesting but quiescent”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

The famous volcano sat above us for the 2 weeks we were in Montserrat, but didn't do anything apart from make sulphurous smells most days. We stayed in Olverston House for the first day and on our arrival got a clear view of the monster, but after then it was shrouded in smoke/steam/cloud. I was a little disappointed as I expected fire and lava, but the vulcanolgists we met said it wasn't that sort of volcano - it normally just threw out ash. Went to a few viewing sites but all the same - cloud, steam and smoke. Most interesting was driving into the exclusion zone and witnessing the devastation that the volcano reaped.
