The Sofitel Bakoua is a lovely hotel with gorgeous gardens, a beautiful harbor view, a fabulous tromp l'oiel (sp???) pool and gigantic, killer lobsters. Yes, French helps as it does throughout Martinique which other reviewers might not have known is part of FRANCE.
I really don't know why others felt uncomfortable in the pool at sunset. I spent each sunset there swimming happily in my favorite bikini as my companion sat in the bar sipping a planteur. The locals and guests who frequented the hotel were an attractive and lively bunch. Don't miss the salsa and carribean dining experience on Saturday nights.
Sure, if you'd rather be with a bunch of 25 year old Americans on their honeymoons, you might prefer St. Lucia. If, on the other hand, you're willing to tap into your high school French and your sense of adventure Martinique may be the place for you.
Should you opt to stay at the Bakoua, be sure to check out the little restaurant down the cliff. It's to the left, and down the hill, facing the entrance to the hotel. They have Abbay de Leffe and Mille Six Cent Soixante Quattre (a nice lager) and great burgers...
Take a pass on the Vision Sous-Marine and get a rental to explore the island.
