“Not your typical Caribbean library!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014 via mobile

The Schoelcher Library is a unique piece of architecture and well worth dropping by when in Fort-de-France. The building - interior and exterior - is something you'd expect to see in Paris. In fact, the structure was originally built in France, disassembled, shipped to Martinique then reassembled. The interior is spacious, with a beautiful ceiling and bookshelves that seem to soar from the floor. There's no charge to enter the building and you are free to take pictures.

“One of the most beautiful places in Fort de France”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014 via mobile

This library is my favorite one. Such a story behind it. Do you know this building was first built in France, and then came apart to be shipped to Fort de France and then rebuilt here ? Quite amazing... It is such a beautiful, peaceful and fresh place I love stepping into it each time I come to town. A place to see.

“A house in the style of Art Nouveau at its best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

In total amazement did we stand in front of this house. The front was covered in details so typical of the Art Nouveau style. Shimmering mosaics, flower embellishment in both mosaic and cast iron, lean collumns framing a huge glass window. If I did not know that we are on a Caribbean Island, I would have said we are in the middle of Paris.

After admiring the outside for quite a while, we did not acutally enter the library and browse through the books. When going inside the building I would consider that spending 1 - 2 hours is well planned.

“Beautiful building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

Little walk from port, in the middle of everything is this beautiful building. Like Fort-de-France itself, it's weird to see buildings like these in middle of Caribbean. It really is little part of Europe, far away from old continent.

“Amusing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

A Neo-Byzantine building which clashes amusingly with the otherwise rather Art Deco architecture of the Fort de France city centre. It houses part of the Fort de France public library, so the inside is of no particular interest to the tourist visitor (unless you want to know what a rather under-funded French municipal library looks like).
