“Pretty much the best place to stay in vieques”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

I'm not kidding. I went with my girlfrind and we found the place perfect: It is in the center of Esperanza, beautiful view from the balconies, close to Sunbay beach, close to the only jetski rental in vieques, 15 dollars in taxi to go downtown or to Playa Caracas, Duffy's restaurant downstairs and all the other restaurants really close by. The room is really comfortable, the air conditioner works well, fast wifi, the housekeeping service is fast and efficient. And the price is affordable. All that made our stay in Flamboyan guest house excelent.

And if you stay there, any doubt you have about the island, ask Donna, the owner, she knows EVERYTHING about it, she is really helpful and kind, she is definitely gonna have good advices.

I stayed 5 nights in this guest house. It is located in front of the Esperanza Beach that is a narrow stretch of beach due to the buildings, mostly restaurants, kiosks and the malecon itself. So definitely not a beach of choice if you are in Vieques. The building is old and definitely needs some updates and rooms can be smelly. They only have 4 rooms, 1 to 3 have a balcony with direct ocean view and room 4 is larger but its balcony's view of the ocean is blocked by trees. Bed linens are OK and not changed everyday but towels are. Rooms have AC although windows in some rooms might not close tightly. Bathrooms are overall small and showers are barely for one person. Breakfast is NOT included despite the rooms are in the second level of a restaurant owned by the guest house's owner (Duffy's). On the weekend I stayed there the noise at night was extreme and I could barely sleep. The host, Donna, is very nice though and she will try her best to make your stay comfortable. She lent us some chairs for the beach. If you are in a budget, I think this is a good choice mainly due to its location that is only a con due to the noise on weekends.

Dear Martin,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on Flamboyan Guest House. I know you were disappointed when you arrived because you weren’t in the room you wanted, so it’s not surprising that you emphasized some minor and also incorrect aspects of Flamboyan Guest House.

I do not own the restaurant, it is my son’s. His chefs come in at 9 AM to prep for a busy day of lunch and dinner. There’s no way to share his facilities for a breakfast service. I agree that a continental breakfast would be a wonderful addition to our already excellent facility and service (please read what everyone else has to say) and so I am working on expanding the limited space I have to accommodate that for the coming season. You neglected to mention the Keurig machine with a wide variety of coffees and teas, the small frig and the toaster oven available for all guests.

You were not in the same room for 5 nights. You changed rooms the 2nd night and of course got clean linens. Had you actually stayed 5 nights in one room, you would have had the sheets changed on the 4th morning, or had you requested a change. Since your sheets were not stained or misused, they did not require changing for 1 night. I thought you appreciated the change of sheets for the last night when your mom was with you.

I’m not sure what’s too small about an almost 2½ ft wide by almost 5 ft long shower. Three 6’5” football players had no complaint.

The window operator that prevented the window from closing completely was replaced yesterday. You neglected to mention that I climbed out on the ledge to make sure that window was closed within 1/16” of sealed.

I did notice an unusual, sour smell in that room while you were there, but it seems to be gone now.

As you know, you chose to come to Vieques on a holiday weekend and stay on the Malecon in Esperanza, and you were disappointed not to have a room closer to the action. You even noted it’s a great location.

Perhaps you should re-evaluate your particular accommodation requirements and next time upgrade to a more manicured, less personal location like the “W” for only $200+/night more.

Sincerely,
Donna Duffy

I highly recommend staying at Flamboyan Guest House on the island of Vieques! Donna was a wonderful, kind, and attentive host. The location is incredible, right on the ocean. Room #3 - where we stayed - is affordable, comfortable, clean, airy, and complete with a incredible balcony overlooking the Caribbean ocean. It really doesn't get much better than this. My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The restaurant right below - Duffy's - is owned by Donna's son, and the food and drinks are delicious and the vibe is fun and fresh. When we checked out, Donna let us keep us bags there so we could spend a few more hours at the beach and even let us shower before heading to catch the ferry well after we checked out. This is a slice of heaven managed by a wonderful host. I dream of returning!

Thank you for the heaps of praise. We work hard to make sure our guests vacation expectations are fulfilled. Try coming back during the winter months when you'll get a sunset over the water with your view. Every evening is more spectacular than the one before. Hope to see you again.

I rented a house in Isabella for a week for our April vacation in Vieques. A lovely house but the neighbor's roosters had us up literally all night (not used to it) so after our 2nd night, we tried to think of where else we could go. We remembered seeing a rooms for rent sign by Duffys so we just pulled up and called.

Donna, the owner, was just making her morning rounds and sat and chatted with us. She's very nice and wants to ensure her business thrives by making her guests happy - we booked the corner room over the bar. She offered us cuts of her aloe plant for our sunburns and assured us, no roosters in her yard so far!

The room was small - you have to step out of the way for another to pass, but it was pretty clean and comfortable. It's actually surprisingly quiet for a room over a bar on the tiny boardwalk. The noise comes in the morning, when everybody's driving to work, and there's always that one guy that wants everyone to witness the power of his sound system. But that's ok.

She's got a Kuerig with plenty of options, a microwave and a small fridge for you to throw a few things in, and it was perfect for us. No roosters, and we slept well. My picture of me sitting on the floor of our room making sandwiches on top of our cooler will always make me smile! It's always the small adventures that make a vacation memorable.

Donna was lovely, the room was fine, always stay in Esperanza vs Isabella and don't worry about needing a kitchen. You don't. You won't be able to buy much in the grocery anyway. Just depends on what's in that day.

This is little guest house is a jewel, with a true Caribbean flare. The rooms are right on the boardwalk and have fabulous views of the ocean from their terraces. We were supplied with fresh beach towels daily, and fresh coffee each morning. Donna, the owner, is a wonderful host and is there to answer any questions you may have about the island, what to do, or where to eat. We would definitely recommend, and plan on going back soon!

This place was a very nice guest house in a great location, one of the nicest we stayed at in PR. It was a bit over priced though in my opinion. We could have probably saved a few bucks by just trying the places next door but once all the fees were added our room went from $110 per night to $140 per night. But the lady managing the place was super nice and friendly. And it was very clean and professionally managed.

This little gem of a place on one of the last "true" Carribean Islands was a great find! It cost about 35% less than a comparable room, but had a great ocean view and was right along the boardwalk. The rooms were clean and quint, and the staff/owner Donna was extremely helpful/friendly. We would definitely recommend it to anyone going to Vieques, and particularly, those on tighter budgets. Also, Duffy's food below is quite good as well.
