My husband nixed the idea of staying in a guesthouse or smaller property, so we ended up staying at the Martineau, since it's the only large resort property on the island. It started off well - we were greeted with a refreshing punch, everyone was friendly and we were upgraded to a poolside room. Unfortunately, after the first night, we asked to be moved because of the lack of privacy. Since the hotel was almost empty, they accommodated us and moved us to a second floor room. The hotel needs some maintenance - in our first room, the ceiling fan was broken, the shower handles were mislabelled hot and cold, and the coffeemaker shocked you when you tried to use it. In the second room, neither of the stoppers in the sinks worked (I wear expensive gas perm contacts, so this is critical) and the air conditioner leaked, leaving puddles to be mopped up. The maid didn't deliver clean glasses or hand towels the entire week. Neither of the rooms had a safe and it took several requests to obtain one. We had read on this site that you shouldn't leave any valuables in the car or on the beach, so that was our only option. The drinks at the resort are pricey - $20 for a wine and a beer, but it was the same for mudslides, so we started drinking those instead. We had lunch there one day poolside and it was OK if you like spending $16 on a hamburger - the $10 quesadilla is a better choice. We also had a light dinner at the restaurant one night because we were too tired to go out, but the Caesar salad was probably the worst I've ever eaten. In addition, instead of charging us for one glass of wine, the bill showed $52 for a bottle of wine. This was blamed on the computer, but it took a half hour to delete the charge. Check your bill! There are grocery stores and I suggest buying some snacks and beverages if you want to economize - there is a small refrigerator in the room. There's also a bakery in Isabella that is good for pastries and breakfast. For lunch, there's casual places like Coconuts and Bananas. For dinner, we liked the Media Luna and the M Bar the best - both places have reasonable prices.
The island is beautiful with great, uncrowded beaches. We visited all of them (even the secret one) - the best snorkelling is on the west side of the new pier that's being built. We met a lot of friendly people - native Viequens and those who had relocated here - we even went to a cookout on the beach at their invitation. Thanks, Joe and Mimi - go Steelers! I highly recommend an SUV for the duration of your trip or at least for a day or two to explore, unless you just want to veg. If you rent from Avis at the resort, like we did for the convenience, I should advise you that you will be billed almost $8 every time you call them, even through the front desk. We didn't find this out until we checked out and I think it's a racket.
In closing, I would still stay at this resort, but it needs some tweaking. I personally would prefer one of the smaller properties. The Inn at the Blue Horizon looked very nice, although you would probably have to reserve far in advance, which we don't ever do. Sorry this is so long, but I had a lot of info to impart.
