My bf and I thought it'd be awesome to visit Vieques while we visit Puerto Rico. Little island in the Caribbean, staying at a luxury hotel, drinking, eating and swimming all day long? Yes, please! Unfortunately, we were on a very short vacation and most of our time would be spent on the main island of PR so we had only 1 day for Vieques.
The day we arrived was the Monday of Labor Day weekend. Everyone was checking out (having stayed there over the weekend) while we waited to check in. After about 15 min wait, we checked in and were assigned a bellhop who gave us a tour of the hotel property. There's the main reception building which has a huge living room area which has lots of seating, a pool table, books, a bar, huge patio with lots of seating and beds, a huge fire pit area and an onsite restaurant, Sorce, which has inside seating as well as patio seating which overlooks the ocean. There are numerous buildings which house the guest rooms and an entire separate section for villas. Aside from those, there are 2 pools, a poolside bar, 2 private beaches, a spa area, a small cafe, tennis courts, a fitness center, and a place where you can check out your complimentary snorkeling and canoeing equipment, among other things.
Our room was on the 3rd floor with a balcony overlooking the pool and ocean. The view was awesome! The room, however, felt minimal and cold, not literally but figuratively. Then again, with the heat of PR, I suppose that's the idea. Here's why: floor is tiled grey, grout is grey, decor is either light grey or dark grey, the standing shower is dark grey almost black and the vanity is grey with a rectangle dark grey cement sink. Despite the pop of color throughout, the room still felt a bit cold, not tropical like the island it's on.
We spent the first day exploring the grounds, drinking and eating sandwiches at the poolside bar, relaxing in the hammock, and eating dinner while watching the sunset on one of the beds on the patio. We had drinks and ceviche prepared 3 different ways, and we truly enjoyed the ceviche. We had every intention of getting dressed up and eat at Sorce, but the patio had a gorgeous view of the ocean and sunset so we stayed put.
The next day we enjoyed the pools before heading to Esperanza to explore. The hotel receptionist called a taxi for us. Once we returned, we were driven to the airport by one of the bellhops.
- Once you arrive to the Vieques airport, walk out of the terminal and to the right, the W Airport Lounge is there to greet you with complimentary cold beverages, including alcoholic beverages, while you wait to be picked up by the hotel.
- Take advantage of the cheap priced rum from the mini bar. One bottle can make a few drinks, cheaper than the drinks at the poolside bar at $12-15 each.
- Take advantage of the complimentary canoe and snorkeling gear provided by the hotel.
One small note, our tv wasn't working. I called to get it fixed but it wasn't able to be fixed. I was a little bummed but not a huge deal since we only stayed for 1 night.
This property is gorgeous, our room had an awesome view and the service is great, but I don't think the rooms are nice enough to justify the price.
Book/Request an ocean view room. Also ask for a higher level room for nice view of the ocean.
