Our stay at Villa Sevilla was one of the best parts of our trip to Puerto Rico! Wally & Marina were very welcoming both in the email correspondence to any questions we had and also upon arrival and during our stay. We stayed at Villa Escondido and it was extremely well stocked with everything we needed (napkins, paper towels, tp, dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, body wash, hair dryer…) including some unopened food from a previous tenant (coffee, salad dressing, canned tuna, etc...). The large apartment was very welcoming every evening when we arrived home from a long day of exploring and the terrace views were astounding every morning when we awoke and enjoyed our coffee. The views of El Yunque and the northern coast of Puerto Rico, as well as the lush environment in between, surrounded us in peace.
Although Villa Sevilla takes about 15 minutes up a winding road to get to from the main road, its location was good with regard to Old San Juan, Luquillo, Fajardo, outlets, etc… We went to a non-denominational English speaking church (similar to Presbyterian or Methodist) in San Juan where the people were VERY inviting. Old San Juan was fun and I could see spending more than 1 day there. The beaches were okay; we liked the Seven Seas beach in Fajardo better than Luquillo beach but we loved the mufongo we had at La Parilla, the #2 kiosk, in Luquillo.
Being in the foothills was a great way to experience more of the real world of Puerto Rico than if we had stayed at a resort (plus no parking costs!). I thought the coqui and nighttime noises might be a problem for me, a very light sleeper, but I used earplugs without a problem and a couple nights didn’t use them and just enjoyed the night sounds and slept very well. The beds are quite comfortable which is a big thing to me because I am very picky about beds.
Once we had driven up into the foothills to our place we didn’t really want to go back out again so we either ate out before coming “home” or we ate in. Wally gave us a great tip on El Verde, a nearby road-side stop, to get mufongo, tostones, a half chicken, etc… for dinner if we wanted to grab something to bring to Villa Escondio. A couple times that’s just what we did. We were able to truly relax being in the foothills with the coqui and the lushness that God created on this part of the island. Thank you, thank you!
