“World class institution”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2012

If you are tired of museums that are more concerned with the names on the tags than with the quality of the works shown, you may like Museo de Arte de Ponce. This museum was started from a conservative but well mounted European art collection. However, it does show interesting contemporary and actual Puerto-Rican work. Additionally, you can currently view works from an up-coming German painter.
Well worth the visit but bring a sweater! All the folks working there wear one, its freezing in there. Honestly, should they turn up the thermostat 5º Celsius they could purchase more artworks every year and leave the sweaters at home!

“A nice break from the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2012

We went here as a family. Younger kids might get a little bored with the art, but the outdoor gardens were really nice. Lots of neat artwork for the older members of the family though.

“The place to go if you love art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2012

This museum, who started as a gift for the people of Ponce quickly became a great art destination. This museum has nothing to envy to the big museums in the US and has enough European art to have you hunger for more. The building itself is a great place to visit. You will not be disappointed when you take couple of hours of your vacation to pause and admire beautiful art, although you can easily spend more time if you want.

“If you like art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2012

Great layout with interesting works of all periods displayed. The only reason to go to Ponce, I think. If you're really not interested in art, skip this one, though. I'm sure it will bore you. Go down to the piers instead and watch the pelicans.

“Worthwhile stop”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2012

Near the historic zone, Ponce Museum of Art is just two floors and packs a wallop. It's modern and airy, with guides who speak English well. Tours in English twice a day, too.

Many rooms have both a theme and a surprise element: The room with classical Greek mythological art has a bright, modern Lion of Hercules painting, providing an ancestor-heir relationship. That guard spoke little English, but when I asked why the odd painting was there, all she said was "Counterpoint" and I understood.

Don't miss the museum's signature oil painting, Flaming June, which is erotic, dreamy and a lush Mediterranean visit in one. In fact, Ponce is that lush Mediterranean visit, Old Spain on the Caribbean. With humidity a blessed 30%, it is nothing like San Juan and a great jumping off point for breathtaking drives up the mile-high mountain range nearby. The museum is easy access from superhighway 52, a little over an hour from San Juan, a beautiful drive.

For a day trip from San Juan, see the Ponce Cathedral, Firehouse, Art Museum and lunch, then drive 25 minutes up Route 10 to the top of the mountains, and head east on the panoramic route, any season, taking your time to rejoin the highway for San Juan.
