“El Ancla = El No Go”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2012

Was one of the recommended restaurants by Hilton as it's extremely close by (near the pier where you can take a crack at feeding extremely large fish)...

Little nervous on directions as some of the roads aren't labeled extremely well here in Ponce. The good = we found it. The bad = we found it.

The service was extremely slow and took forever to get the food; it was edible but not very enjoyable. Warning, if you do want to go ahead and try it and have kids, there is no kids menu outside of ordering chicken nuggets.

If in Ponce, recommend eating at the Hilton or trying one of the other restaurants in the town center...

“Horrible Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2012

We went to this restaurant because we were given a glowing recommendation by a fellow guest at our hotel. The service was the worst we had in Puerto Rico.(slow service seems to be the norm in Puerto Rico.) The food took forever to arrive. The waiter was extremely inattentive and rude. The food was just okay, no different than any other Puerto Rican restaurant we ate at.

“You can always count on the food being excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

My oldest son is 33 years old and I remember going there while pregnant with him. The food has always been excellent. Their Mojo sauce and everything sea related fantastic. One of few places were the escargots are delicious, but take your own bread or ask for tostones, don't leave the escargot sauce on the plate, that is the best part. Great rice and beans. Empanadillas de Chapin. Portions are good.
Service can be a little slow at times but the attitude makes up for it.
AIM to please.
If in a rush call ahead, you can also pick up take out.
No rush! go to the back room and watch TV or listen to music. Live music some nights and time of year. If you tend to be cold, take a sweater
Prices depend on you palate!!

“Great authentic food, not so great area, but still worth it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2011

El Ancla appears to be the only open business within several blocks of the restaurant and can be quite scary at night. However, they do have a parking lot and ample street parking right outside. Never felt unsafe! The inside looks like a 1980's banquet hall but the food was really good and you can't beat the price. Mofongo, surullitos, asopao with shrimp...we left STUFFED and HAPPY!

“A Bright Spot In Ponce”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2010

We were on a day trip from San Juan, just driving around Ponce to get a feel of the town. We happen upon El Ancla as we were searching for "The Marina". The restaurant was bright and airy. The staff were pleasant and eager. And we enjoyed a wonderful lunch. We chatted with one of the owners after lunch and discovered that the area had been ripe for a restoration about 30 years ago but it never took. There's a beautiful park right across from the restaurant. It's really a shame there isn't more in the neighborhood to attract people.
