“A Place To Be Super Active or Super Tranquil”

Recently my wife and I spent five wonderful days at the Ritz Carlton Dorado Beach in Dorado, Puerto Rico. My wife is a travel agent and we have been fortunate enough to have stayed at Ritz Carlton properties around the world. Without a doubt our stay at the Dorado Beach, (the only Ritz Carlton Reserve in the Western Hemisphere) was one of the best we have ever had at a Ritz Carlton property. The grounds are superb, the rooms excellently appointed and the staff extremely courteous, helpful and professional in every respect. We particularly enjoyed the delicious buffet breakfasts offered at Mi Casa restaurant. The selection was huge, very fresh and beautifully presented. We were very fortunate to have been served by A.J. Colon during our stay. His knowledge of the offerings and willingness to accommodate our food preferences in addition to his great sense of humor made breakfast one of the delights of our stay. The facilities and activities cater to virtually every interest and taste, from golf, to swimming, to biking, nature walks, etc.. The Concierge staff was very knowledgeable and helped me plan our day trips around Puerto Rico. My wife really enjoyed the Botanico Spa, a very relaxing place in what has to be one of the most tranquil beach resorts in the Americas. All in all, a great place to stay if you just want to “veg” by the beautiful pool or fill your days and nights with a whole host of activities.. We can’t wait to go back!

Room Tip: Really can't have a "bad" room as all face the beach; huge rooms with balconies and so...

The hotel is without question the nicest I have enjoyed to date. To be sure, the guestrooms -- all of which face the ocean directly (and are very close to it) -- are beautiful, spacious and well appointed. But the special qualities of the resort are the sprawling, beautifully maintained grounds, the pristine beach and other touches such as outdoor showers and plunge pools in the ground floor rooms. These attributes, plus the beautiful spa, are what make this resort special. We also enjoyed biking on the bike trails, playing tennis and the state of the art fitness center. Indeed, the resort is so sprawling that we did not have the opportunity to explore it all. I should add that we booked our room through Eli Goldstein from a travel company called Luxury Connections; Eli was able to secure a discounted rate which is very difficult for this hotel. He can be reached at eli@hotelrooms.com.

Cautionary note: check your folio carefully before leaving the hotel. I noticed some mistaken charges (which were immediately removed). Also, note that the plunge pools (and I believe even the main pool) are not heated. As a result, we did not use the plunge pool much (though we enjoyed having it outside our room).

Room Tip: West Beach is preferable because you have direct access to the beach from your room. Check your b...

Overall, we had an amazing time at the Ritz Dorado Beach. Here is our breakdown:

Room: We were in a 2-bedroom suite in building 3 on ground floor West Beach. 2 Bedroom suites are a 1-bedroom suite connected to a studio (reserve) suite. The 1 bedroom suite has a larger pool than a "plunge pool" room. They call it a "tranquility pool" and is about the size of a small lap pool. These suites usually occupy the corner of the building.
The last night we moved to a 2 bedroom residence (our room was booked the last night of our stay, we knew we would be moving). While the residence was larger and had a full kitchen, it did not come with *any* amenities (coffee, water, honor bar, etc). If you wanted anything, you had to ring room service. There is also construction of new residences going on and you do hear some noise, although minimal. Our stay in the suites was seamless and incredible. Our stay in the residence was plagued with one small inconvenience after another (no hot water, dishwasher flooded, service not as prompt as in the "hotel" section). For that reason, upon a return we would stay in the suites not residences.
Food: I found the food at this property to be above par of any carribean resort I have stayed at previously. Encanto and Positivo were our favorites. We dined at both for lunch/dinner. We also enjoyed the "buffet" breakfast at MiCasa - lots of choices, amazing fresh yogurts, jams, pastries, smoked salmon, etc. We also dined at MiCasa for dinner. Felt they tried too hard with the food and would not return. Had dinner one night at Zafra and it reminded us of poor wedding food (with a menu to match).
Activiites: We traveled with two small children (under age 6). We thoroughly enjoyed getting fitted for bikes and took rides each morning along the paved paths with ocean on one side and golf course on the other. Simply beautiful. There is a little-known Aqua Park on property that is open on weekends and holidays. You can lounge & sunbathe while the kids play in the various pools, tube a lazy river and enjoy a giant water slide. There is food/ice cream/snacks and drinks served (alcoholic and non). This is a members-only facility, open to guests of Ritz Carlton and those that are members of the beach club. It was fun to mingle with the locals and enjoy this park.

We had a great time and plan to return.

Room Tip: We were in a 2-bedroom suite in building 3 on ground floor West Beach. 2 Bedroom suites are a 1-bed...

Jaw dropping beauty, excellent service. We found the food quite good but we stayed 3 nights. Likely after that it might get tiresome.
The spa is very special and unique - a must try. We rode our bikes around the bike path each day. The gyms are excellent.
I found we didn't have much use for our butler - a nice touch but we didn't find it necessary.
As others have said, the rooms are incredibly special, especially the bathrooms. We had a plunge pool which was delightful.
A spectacular property!

This was one of our most fantastic vacation experiences ever. The staff at this resort reads your mind and delivers your desires before you even think of it.
The resort is absolutely beautiful. The beaches, grounds, the golf courses are some of the best I've ever experienced.
The rooms are to die for, steps from the beach with a private plunge pool, an indoor shower that has no walls, a soaking tub with the most amazing bath scents and infusions ever. The best though has to be the outdoor shower, you feel that you are in the rain forest showering in the rain.
I can not say enough about the staff. They are professional, caring and most of all became our friends. Every one of the beach and pool staff, the in-room dining staff, the house keeping staff are the greatest. I wish I had room to list them all on Trip Advisor. One major accolade has to go to the head of security, for his kindness and vigilence. And a great big thanks for your gift.
I would recommend this resort to everyone without exception.
The people at Dorado Beach are with out doubt the finest I ever experienced.
We loved the people and will go back because of them.
The personal attention in the restaurants, from preparing special meals to the flight of lights over the sea was so touching.
Thank you to all are new friends.

Just got back from a weekend at the new Ritz Dorado Beach. My husband and I travel extensively and stay at only St. Regis or Four Seasons type of resorts, so we expect a certain levels of service when we travel. I think if your spending upwards of a $1000 a night for a room the service should reflect that. For the most part it did, Peter the general manager of the property is amazing and very accommodating and helpful. The resort and rooms and beautiful, the outdoor shower in our room was amazing and waking up to an ocean view from your bed was so relaxing. Spa is probably the top 3 of any spa I have been to at any resort. The pool and beach are great. The only 2 things criticisms are that if you are charging top dollar for rooms you have to deliver on all levels. The service with the waiters was inconsistent, not bad just not consistent, I think they need to be either trained more or supervised more, there were times where no one was available at the pool to get our chairs set up, house keeping didn't check the frig before we went into our room and there was a left over sandwich in the frig from the previous occupants and the food a Mi Casa is just average. If your going to compete on the levels of the four season or st. regis you MUST have food that is better than average. I would stay again but I don't think I would eat dinner at Mi Casa again. They are still a fairly new property so hopefully they will work out some of the kinks.

Friends of ours recommended that we try this Ritz and that we would be impressed. They were correct!

The facility had been completely redone 1 year ago and it is beautiful. Our room was spacious, had indoor and outdoor showers and it opened onto the beach. The food was very good as was the service.

It is expensive and very good for couples.
