My friends and I wanted to take an overnight trip from San Juan to Cabo Rojo on the West side of the island...we knew it wd be a long trip so we decided to make Mayaguez our spot to sleep before heading to that area. First of all, the town square in Mayaguez is completely charming, feels like you're in Spain. The Howard Johnson itself is housed in a former Monastery and the Main Lobby is very hip and modern, there's a small nice bar area/check in area and that is where a Continental Breakfast is served until 10AM on weekends. The room was CLEAN, updated and had great air-conditioning and...we loved the balcony room we had overlooking Plaza Colon (the town square). We weren't expecting much, but we were wowed from the moment we walked in! Ricomini Bakery is across the street, wonderful pastries and Cafe con Leche. The small local bar
called "La Casita" was a nice place to try the local beer (Medalla Light) at $2.00/bottle...and when you tip the appreciative Bartender, he rings a bell! Sweet sweet little town. I'd definitely return to this Howard Johnson again; Safe, Clean, Great Location and the BEST idea for a midway stop to Cabo Rojo I ever had! Thank you HoJo!
