My family and I ate at the Ikebana Sushi Bar in Isla Verde on December 31, 2012. The restaurant was located about one block from the Embassy Suites where we were staying, near the San Juan airport. The restaurant is on the second floor of the building, above the Pueblo grocery store.
When we arrived at 6:30, there were no other patrons in the restaurant. Needless to say, service was great, even after others arrived for dinner.
We lived in Japan for 4.5 years so I'm very familiar with Japanese food, and the Ikebana was as good as any Japanese restaurant I've been to in the States. Prices were a little higher for the sushi, with nigiri sushi about $4.50 per piece, sashimi about $6.00 for two pieces.
For appetizers, we ordered the vegetable tempura and the chicken satay. Both were very good, even though we received actual peanut butter with the satay instead of traditional peanut sauce. We made our own by mixing the peanut butter with soy. We also ordered gyoza and a Fantasy Roll, which was also both very good.
For dinner the five of us ordered the teriyaki chicken, teriyaki steak, sushi, two additional rolls, and the grilled tuna. All were excellent and tasted like we would have expected in any high-end Japanese restaurant in the US.
I would highly recommend the Ikebana Japanese restaurant to anyone looking for authentic Japanese food.
