Considering price and location, it's hard to beat this place if you're an independent traveler on a budget. The building is old, but the property managers, Neal and Noyda, have done everything they can to spruce it up. My studio had a nice flat-screen TV, DVD player, iPod stereo, and full kitchen. They even provide you with snacks and bottles of water (at a fair price on your honor). When I walked in and saw the room air-conditioner, I got a bit worried it wouldn't be able to cool down the apartment. But it worked great and chilled everything lickety-split. If I wanted to get nit-picky, I could point out that the walls are a bit thin and the tile in the bathroom looks like something out of 1960s Los Angeles. But, hey, for under $100 I'm willing to compromise on style.
Location-wise, Coqui Del Mar is on the east side of Ocean Park, a mile or two from Isla Verde and maybe a mile from Condado. It's on a residential street with no outlet, so things tend to quiet down after sunset. There's a beach a five-minute walk away that is fine for sunbathing but sometimes a bit rough for swimming. Five more minutes of walking puts you right in the middle of Ocean Park beach, perhaps the best city beach in San Juan. The bus, a bargain at 75 cents, took about a half-hour to get to Old San Juan, and cabs from there cost $14-$19 depending on the time and exact location. With the deli Kasalta and the cafe Pinky's a 15-minute walk from the guesthouse, there's no reason to go hungry. One tip: I found some cabdrivers were unfamiliar with the exact location of Coqui Del Mar, so tell them it's right behind Tres Palmas Guesthouse - a known landmark.
Neal and Noyda were extremely helpful (they even drove me to the airport, which I thought was above and beyond the call of duty) and made it clear they were available any time. Yet they clearly respected their guests' privacy - something I appreciated. I would not hesitate to return.
