“Chic and cool = Da House”

Da House Hotel

We stayed here for one night in April and loved it. We didn't hear any noise at all probably because it was a Monday so I can't speak about the noise issue. If you are looking for an amazingly chic and cheap place to stay- this is it.
You are staying in a converted 300 year old building with gorgeous Spanish tiles throughout, 14 foot ceilings, comfortable beds, nice shower and inspiring art. Each room is named after one of the artists who originally turned the abandoned building in the 1970's into an artist commune- in 2007 it was convereted into Da House. There is an orginal piece of art in every room - the place is incredibly gorgeous and textured with cool furniture and paintings.
The staff was so freindly and helpful- the place is romantic and edgy, and centrally located and within walking distance to all of the restaurants, galleries, boutiques, and El Morro.
If you are looking for a place with a tv and cable and an elevator- don't stay here.
This place feels European, New Yorkish, trendy, cool but not pretentious. No one is snotty or has an attitude there. They are friendly, and artistic staff. This is an eclectic place you can't find anywhere else. Make sure to check out the art thoughout the hotel and don't miss out on the roof-top jacuzzi with incredible views of old San Juan.

First, here's the deal on the noise everyone alternately complains about or says isn't so bad. Some nights, notably Thursdays (and perhaps some others) are "theme" nights at the club downstairs. Thursdays = Drums. Loud Drums. Drums so loud that even with 32db earplugs deep in your ears, you won't have a chance of sleeping soundly until after 2-3 am when it dies down. This applies to the "outside" rooms, not the interior ones. The "regular" music /noise is easily blocked out by some earplugs, and really isn't that bad, even without plugs, at least in our 4th story room.

The hotel itself is fine; the rooms are on the small side, as befits it's self-styled, "classic hostels of Europe," description. The staff was friendly and lots of interesting art scattered throughout. The location absolutely cannot be beat, and is the real reason this hotel is a good value at around $100 for the average room.

WiFi in the lobby worked great, and they have a nice flatscreen up on the wall along with a wireless keyboard and mouse for those that don't have a laptop.

Overall, BIG plus for location, don't stay in an "outside" room on (at least) Thursday nights. Bring earplugs for other nights in an "outside" room.

“Loved Da House”

We stayed at Da House our first night in Puerto Rico. It was a little hard to find, but once we got there, the place was great! The lobby was beautiful, full of cool furniture and gorgeous artwork. Our room was really clean and we had a great balcony. I had read the other reviews and was worried about the noise, but it really wasn't that bad. The rooftop patio was really cool. We had a great time here and wished we would have stayed longer!

We stayed on the alley-side, fourt floor. Noisey? You bet! Bring earplugs! No elevator? You bet! Exercise is a good thing! Would I stay there again? YOU BET! The service is EXCELLENT and the ambience is so charming that we forgot about noise & stairs the second we walked into the room. The location puts you right in the heart of old San Juan. Our recommendation: If you only have a day or two before a cruise or whatever, stay in this hotel.

“LOVED DA HOUSE”

My husband and I stayed at this hotel prior to a cruise.
we LOVED Da House. Location was great. Rooms are small but very nicely decorated. We spent much time on the roof top terrace enjoying the night time breeze and some glasses of wine. We visited many of the local establishments in downtown San Juan which we truly enjoyed. YES-there is a bit of a noise factor due to the salsa club that is in the alley where the entrance of the hotel is...so if you know this would bother you-please do not stay here. I wouldn't want to have someone write a bad review about Da House since you would have fair warning about the noise factor by reading previous reviews.. We had an interior room-and let me tell you that when you close the wooden shutters the room remains pitch black-doesn't matter if it's day or night, it's dark. Make sure you have some sort of wake up call, since we really over slept. It did not interfere with our cruise departure since we did not leave until 5pm.
The staff are geat and we will definetly return to DA HOUSE in a heartbeat.
