Alright, so this is the cheapest place we could rent in puerto rico. We
paid around $90/day all taxes included etc. This is one of the only
three good points about this place. The other good points are the relatively close proximity to the beach (7 mins walk) and the
friendly staff.
The cons are plenty: no room service at all, location bordering
bad neighborhood, foul-smelling rooms etc. For the
rustic-minded however it is not too bad, almost ok.
Ultimately, however, for about $20 more you can get a nice
beach-front location. Just search online for "puerto rico guest
house", you'll see what I mean. What you should do is get a place
that is RIGHT ON THE BEACH. No walking distance etc etc.
In the greater San Juan area (especially in the gay-friendly
Ocean Park neighborhood) there's tens of such
cheap guest houses right on the beach and they are not more
than $100-120 for a basic room accommodating 2 people.
The right on the beach part is important because otherwise most
of the place is a bit run down and unpleasant. But if you spend
the entire stay on/around the beach and venture in the
walgreens/gas-station rich area only when necessary you might
even get a decent holiday.
As a last comment: I found Puerto Rico hugely over-hyped. If
you are just looking for a warm place for new year's/christmas
it is ok (and close enough for a direct short flight to NYC).
On the other hand if you are looking for a nice tropical
vacation try elsewhere.
