We stayed at this hotel for one night after ending a cruise. we picked it because of the location. we wanted to spend the day in old san juan and thought that the close proximity would be nice. it was! it is on a great main street in old town and we took a "walking tour" outlined by the frommers website. we were within walking distance of everything.
we arrived at the hotel at around 11am (our taxi driver didn't know exactly where it was, but we had the hotel phone number and she called for directions. just know that it is literally half a block from hotel milano and it will be easy to locate). anyway, we got there at 11am and the put us right in a room even though checkin wasn't until 3pm. the room was great. no, it didn't have a window (though some of the rooms do), but it was a HUGE room. for one night it really wasn't noticable. we were cold, so we asked the guy to turn the airconditioning down, which he promptly did. we had a queen bed suite and i cannot stress how large the two rooms were! the bathroom was small, but very clean. we were pleased witht he friendlienss of the staff, the size and cleanliness of the rooms,a nd overall the fabulous location! it was such a great location. there was a culinary and music fest going on when we were there and we could walk to all the action.
the only complaint is the breakfast. packaged honeybuns, bread you could toast, and very bad coffee with no real cream or milk to put in it.
but that is my only complaint. for the price and location, we would stay there again.

SJ Suites is a great value compared to other hotels in Old San Juan. SOme positives are: cost - definately cheap for the area, location - in the middle of everything in Old San JUan - you can walk to everything from here, and the staff is very friendly (Family owned hotel).
Some negatives - continental breakfast is coffee and wrapped up sugar items - no bagels, cereal, fruit or juices, I found a bug in the bathroom - gross, and after 9pm there is no front desk so if you need anything no one is there to help you but they do leave a phone number for you to call but there are no phones in the room - so hopefully you have a cell phone.
Overall, for the money this places is decent.

We stayed at the S.J. Suites for one night pre-cruise in March. Based on some of the earlier reviews, I had expected a little nicer place. But in a city where every other hotel was either priced stratospherically or got dodgy reviews, it wasn't bad at all. We were in one of the windowless rooms, which I didn't mind, but the room temperature was unbelievably freezing! (Wish I'd figured out how to change it like the earlier reviewer did!)

The location was fantastic. I loved being in the middle of old San Juan, being able to walk to El Morro, to our ship, and to a great restaurant (the Kafe Puerto Rico, on Calle O'Donnell). In short, the hotel was very average, but the location was so good that it's worth overlooking for a short stay.

If you're looking to be right smack in the middle of Old San Juan, this is the place for you. It is literally located over some shops on a popular shopping street. The ports are three blocks away. There are restaurants everywhere you turn. And you can walk to sites like El Morro and St. Cristobal and the governor's mansion. The bad thing is that the hotel is far from nice, if you're used to hotels like Hilton or Ramada or even Howard Johnson. Instead of the hotel feel, it feels like you're staying in the guest bedroom of someone's home. It doesn't even look like a hotel; the place resembles (and may very well be) an office that's been converted. To get to the front desk, you have to press the buzzer at a nondescript door from the street and take the elevator to the second floor. If for some reason there's no one at the front desk to buzz you in, a sign tells you to go into the jewelry store next door and use their phone to call someone to come open the door. (But once you've checked in, you get your own key to open the front door.) The free breakfast consisted of bread that you can toast, individually wrapped Little Debbie-type pastries that you can heat up in the microwave, Oscar Mayer ham slices, and Kraft singles, plus tea, juice, and coffee (but it WAS free). The room that we stayed in, the furniture, and the bathroom all looked and felt worn. There was some street traffic noise coming in through the windows. However, everything was clean and the bedsheets were supersoft. And if you're not planning to stay in your room very much, then this place serves the purpose of being centrally located just fine. Really, the location is unbeatable. I'm guessing that's why the place has gotten so many nice reviews. If you don't care about cushiness, then it's quite perfect.

This is not El Convento, but neither is the price. This is the next best option in old town. 2 blocks from Cruise terminal. Rooms on street can be noisy and I agree about air conditioning; they did adjust it when asked. Breakfast is meager, but there is a great Puerto Rican "diner" around corner by Radio Shack which is GREAT! All the best restaurnats are 2-3 blocks up the street. There is a night watchman. Yes there is a bad view room (see Pictures)and a windowless room, but I would stay there again.
Had a massage with Bill Carr [" "]who they recommended; he will come to hotel or you can go to his place near El Convento. Hot rocks, reflexology, massage all in one for only $40. It was so great I gave him a huge tip.
