All of the reviews here are quite accurate, except for the amount of noise. We stayed here one night before our cruise, which was a Saturday, then another night after the cruise (Sunday). We came with another couple. Between the two couples we stayed in rooms 301, 401 & 501, which are all on the street side. The first night (Saturday) was extremely noisy. People yelling, singing, fighting, cars honking, screeching, police sirens, car alarms, etc. all until about 4:30 a.m. Very noisy. I finally fell asleep around 4:30, but that's also when I remembered that I had earplugs, which helped.
The Sunday that we stayed there was slightly less noisy, but still heard all of the above, except the fighting. Again I didn't get much sleep...would start to doze when a car alarm or something else would go off.
I had a look at the rear rooms (which were about $300/night). They are exactly like the front rooms, except more floor space. The one I saw had no view, but I'm sure would have been quieter. I thought the beds were just ok...nothing special.
If you ask the front desk to adjust the air conditioning, they will. The service and friendliness of the hotel was exceptional. The location also was absolutely perfect. We could walk anywhere in Old San Juan without any problems. We took our luggage down to the pier from the hotel on the first day of our cruise (downhill), which was fine, but hired a taxi ($12) from the cruise ship back up a week later.
I don't think I would stay here again (having already toured the area once), but would recommend it for someone that could pay to have a back room. I think it's very expensive for what you get, but in comparison to all of the other hotels it's probably pretty average. Location is great, but expect noise, traffic, and lots of happy people!
