Our party of 4 had a late lunch here on December 29th. The restaurant must have been understaffed because service was very slow and the owner/manager was frantically running around the place in a foul mood.
We were not in a big hurry, which was a good thing; eventually we ordered drinks, got menus, and our order was taken by a friendly young guy who had been working behind the patio bar.
When a table of 6 next to us (who were seated after us) complained to the manager that they had waited 25 minutes for their drinks, he said - and I quote - "Well, you're going to have to wait another 25 minutes for your food, and if you don't like it, you can pay for your drinks and leave." He was loud and nasty, and they promptly left the restaurant. It was uncomfortable.
A few minutes later, while still waiting for our food order, the manager approached our table. I greeted him in my pretty good Spanish, and he immediately responded by launching into a heavily "gringo" accented Spanish in the nastiest and most mocking tone. I'm not even sure why he appeared at our table because we hadn't complained about anything and his tone and words (and he went on way too long) were totally humiliating to me.
Well, that took all the fun out of our lunch even though the food was pretty good. We ate, paid, and left. We gave him no cause to be so unpleasant. We were in Old San Juan for 6 days including New Years Eve, and we had a blast.
