Warning about Bodega Chic: They're looking to rip you off.
My family and I were originally planning to go to Bodega Chic on Wednesday of Christmas week, but had to cancel. When we called to cancel the reservation, the person who took the call was upset that we weren't coming. For that reason, we decided to go on Friday. The restaurant was empty with the exception of one table when we arrived. The bar, however, had more than a few people in it.
I have to say, the food was pretty good, for the most part. The appetizers and salads were beautifully presented and quite tasty. All of the entrees on the menu were between 16 and 20 dollars. I ordered the special, Dover sole. Huge mistake.
Everyone else's dinner was fine. I had to send back the Dover sole because it was drowning in lemon sauce. Absolutely could not taste the fish. I asked to have the fist re-plated without the sauce. Even then, it was pretty strong, but it's not like I could eat it too quickly anyway. The bones were everywhere. I've never been presented with fish like this. Normally, you can pull the meat off the bones of sole without the bones coming along for the ride. Not this time. It was not fun.
Here comes the kicker. The Dover sole special was more than two times that of any other entree on the menu. Seriously. Like I said, all the entrees were under $20. The sole was $39.50. We complained to the waitress. She said that was the price. We asked for the manager, but were told there wasn't one (really?). We complained to a woman who appeared to be a hostess of sorts. She said the owner/chef was the manager. I asked to speak with him. The hostess went back to the kitchen. She returned moments later to tell us that the sole is normally $45. What? The sole isn't even on the regular menu. Clearly we weren't going to be satisfied, so we paid our bill, leaving just ten percent for a tip. The waitress wasn't at fault for the price, but she should have said what the price was considering the difference from other entrees.
Alas, I also have learned a lesson: Ask for the price of specials. I hate to do so, as it seems so petty, but it beats getting ripped off again.
