“Hidden gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2012

Ive visited Madeleine a few times with my wife, always for breakfast/brunch. Service has been excellent every time. The dishes ordered have also been consistently delightful. Great coffee and pastrie selection too. Would love to try items from the rest of the menu sometime. Also, the place offers a great value and affordability for the excellent quality of food to be had.

“European flavors hidden in suburban San Juan”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

I had lunch with my wife at this bistro restaurant hidden in a strip mall in Rio Piedras, and frankly I had missed the place because its facade is rather low-key. Once inside, however, we found ourselves in a charming place with about ten small tables and a counter displaying their tempting bakery goods, including fruit tarts, oatmeal/cranberry cookies, quesitos and creme brulees. We had a wonderful pumpkin soup with basil oil, fragrant and savory; other soups include plantain, black bean soup, bacon & potato, and mushroom cream & Brie cheese. My wife had a crisp, fresh baby arugula salad with heirloom cherry tomatoes, walnuts, cranberries and feta cheese, while I had a creamy pesto penne dish with smoked salmon that was hearty, fragrant and abundant. The menu has also other tempting options such as pizzetas, paninis and open-faced sandwiches, and the home fries and grilled tuna platters had us craning our necks toward other tables.. Finally, their Gustos-brand coffee put the big-box baristas to shame, so creamy and aromatic! They were sadly out of madeleine cookies this time, but or server Nicole recommended their oatmeal/cranberry cookies , which were moist and tasty, and quite large, along with a delicious blueberry/strawberry tart. They have an outdoor sitting area as well, although inside is nice with the decor and the food displays, and the A/C to tame the Puerto Rican summer heat. Next time, I am having the chocolate and Nutella hazelnut spread cake, or perhaps the key lime tart. The madeleines? To go, with some more of that sinful coffee. I have had similar great bistro moments but only at chic downtown places in San Juan and major metro areas in the US mainland. To find this place so close to home is great, and I wish the best for the owners and staff. They have a breakfast menu too, but sadly they are not open on Sundays.

“A small place to have a nice meal with gourmet touch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2011

I been twice for breakfast only. The place is small and is very nicely decored. The first impression is of a well organized and cleaned shop. The times I've eaten have been Saturday and the place is not full. There are small tables outside. They offer the typical but with a gourmet twist. I had the french toasts and waffles and are outstanding. My daughter had once scrambled eggs and special potatos that were very good. Their coffee is outstanding. They also have fresh orange juice. They have pastries. They have for lunch soups, saldas, and sandwiches. I'm planning going sometime for lunch. They have a pumpkin & basil oil soup that sounds very good. Everything has a gourmet touch!
