“Perfect In Every Way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

Our San Juan friends took my friend and I to a birthday dinner here. El Pescador has a great menu and experienced servers and offer a perfect experience for dining out. The place is rather small and the tables are close together, but we never felt cramped or crowded. The outdoor seating can be a little noisy as it is right on the street.

The entire area is very tourist friends with lots of little bars and restaurants. The entire experience made for a perfect night out.

“Fresh Fish, Local Flavor, Touristic Zone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

I am a local and this restaurant is a close walking distance home, so I visit on a regular basis.

The location is on an area you must come see if you're in San Juan, called 'La Placita'. La Placita used to be a centric area in every town where fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, etc. were sold. Around this area you would find different venues and services. Today they continue to sell the vegetables and groceries during the day, and in the late afternoon, early evening (mostly Wed-Sun), the main building closes and the area fills up with locals who come to enjoy an open air happy hour, eat local fritters and food from the surrounding establishments, while listening to latin rhythms such as salsa music, among others.

Now, about the restaurant, the freshness of the fish is absolutely the best among many restaurants in the metro area, a good variety, and a taste of the local food. They prices range from $18-30, which adding drinks could add up to about $50-60 per person. The establishment is run by the owners and their family, so they are usually looking to please their customers and making sure the food maintains the quality.

Also to note the establishment is small and you must know this in advance because depending on the time the restaurant can get very crowded. It has a few dining tables with a/c in the inner part of the establishment, and a few open air tables overlooking 'La Placita'. If you don't want to have a long wait, a tip is to call in advance to be included in the list and be there before your turn is up.

In terms of what's good, depends on the palate, but if you've never visited PR you must try something with fried plantains such as 'Mofongo' or 'Aranitas' which can be served as a side with your dish. I like the fried red snapper, which its usually very fresh and the cod filet. If you're looking to try cocktails, the sangria is very strong but good, and they take pride on it.

If you're looking for a local experience with excellent fresh fish, this is definitively a must visit!

“Cool local spot! In the Placita.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

This restaurant is located in the coolest little area called La Placita where adult locals go to have a drink and dine in one of the many small restaurants with a lot of outdoor seating. This is about 4 minutes away from the Marriott San Juan in Taxi. We could have walked, but I was skeptical of getting lost.
The seafood at this restaurant was outstanding! Be prepared to WAIT or get there very early, like 5 pm to secure a table. Order the octopus salad!
Our server was quite apathetic checking her cell every two seconds.

“Fresh Fish”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

The restaurant is a bit small and tends to be crowdy. However, if you want to eat fresh fish that is exquisitely prepared, this is the place. Thursday and Friday are the days when you have the largest crowds but that is part of the fun at La Placita.

“Fresh fresh fish!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

Have the monkfish if they have it on their menu. There is a standard menu with lots of paella and other fresh fish, then there is a lengthy handwritten menu with all the day's specials. The monkfish was cooked in its own clay pot in a delicious garlicky sauce. They also serve a perfectly cooked salmon in a mango sauce. It was a little sweet although scrumptious. Both were on the handwritten menu.
