“A very nice surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013 via mobile

Booked this hotel for a very low price ,and did not expect much. The outside and security to get in was really good.
A really nice and effective welcome met us in reception. Furniture and decor was very tasteful, everything was clean and fresh, there is a small pool and a nice little garden. Breakfast is at a sister hotel just nearby.
Our room was not big but enough for us two, with a big and comfortable bed. This hotel is a nice surprice.
Beach is 5 min walk away, the neighbourhood is of the better kind. To go to old town or to central San Juan, the buses run
Just a few minutes walk away, nr 21 or 53. Have 75 cents in coins, no bills.
All in all, if we come back to San Juan ,this will be the hotel we will try to book first.

The boutique hotel is in a quiet neighborhood and is at walking distance to the beach. It is not in a tourist area, thus you'll have a great experience. The neighborhood has some pretty nice authentic restaurant Puerto Rican restaurants. The staff is great However, the room is not that great.

We found At Wind Chimes to be a charming little inn - the staff was extremely good and friendly and helpful. It does depend upon which room you have - ours, #124, a "deluxe" room, was just great - 4 windows with great breeze, a huge and comfortable bed. There were several nice restaurants nearby - one a very popular Puerto Rican restaurant, the other a French bistro.
We reserved a parking space, so we had no trouble at all with our car, always a space.

Room Tip: Take a room on the second floor and a "deluxe" one if it is available.

I had a great experience. I did call ahead to confirm reservation. Staff was very friendly. Me and my bf dont like the crowded scene so this was a good fit for us. Only one or two more guests that we came across. Only 1 day for like and hour we shared the pool, other than that, completely for ourselves. Close to restaurants and beach. Beach with strong currents. Jets in the jacuzzi were not working at the time, but warm water. Bar only open at night for drinks, but huge flat screen ON at all times, office staff will put on tv whichever channel u wanna watch. We bought finger food and beers and watched NFL playoffs right there the two of us! I would go back. Oh, fridge was not working in room, we didn't need it anyways, but check before u buy anything if you are planning on using it.

Just east of Old San Juan is the upscale hotel zone and neighborhood of Condado. The At Wind Chimes Inn is an alternative to full service hotel casinos in this area. The hotel is a converted villa with only 18 rooms and the grounds and rooms are well kept and very charming. My wife and I enjoyed 4 nights here. Although the inn does not have a restaurant, several good ones are nearby.

Room Tip: No elevators, no bellmen so first floor rooms are better.

I booked a room, 6 months in advance, at the Acacia Boutique hotel during the busy San Sebastián Festival weekend. The price was reasonable and it reviewed well on Tripadvisor. When we arrived, we were told the hotel was overbooked and we had to stay at their sister property, the Wind Chime, which was just down the street. Because we were in town during the festival we expected we'd need to be flexible, so we didn't complain and were just happy to have a room. While we waited, several people walked in to the lobby asking if any rooms were open and were turned away.

The receptionist was very nice, walked us to the hotel with our luggage, and told us they gave us a larger king suite with a kitchenette. The lobby at the Wind Chime looked nice and it seemed like a safe location, just a block or so from the beach. Both the Wind Chime and the Acacia are a 10-15 minute walk from the Condado area which is very nice. I would stay in this general area (Ocean Park) again. The receptionists at the Wind Chime were also very nice and helpful, suggesting restaurants and transportation options. That's where the positive comments end.

Our room was #103 on the first floor, next to the "pool." The pool looked clean and had a nice waterfall, but it is tiny with maybe 1 or 2 chairs. With the beach so close by who needs the pool I guess?

The room is in dire need of renovation. The mattress was old with scratchy sheets, but the worst was the bathroom- moldy shower curtain, ants crawling all over the sink and a pool of standing water on the floor, apparently from some kind of leak. Within minutes, my husband and I both had mosquito bites on our legs. The room had no working AC, but since it was January and we spent very little time in the room this wasn't the worst issue. The "kitchenette" had an old cabinet with a stove. Maybe it used to be an apartment? The room also provided no privacy, with thin walls and gaps in the windows and doors so that anyone walking by could hear you talking and you could hear them.

Needless to say, we stayed here for 1 night and moved to the Caribe Hilton and then to the Chateau Cervantes for the remainder of our stay. If all other hotels hadn't been booked we would not have lasted 1 night at the Wind Chime. The Chateau was actually less expensive and much nicer and the Caribe was only $50 more/night and was fabulous.

To summarize-

Pros: Location and staff

Cons: Everything else.

Don't stay there if you're looking for a clean, mold free room. The entrance and surrounding hotel looked fine, but the room was very questionable. There was mold in the bathroom and window curtains were dirty. If you can get past cleanliness, then enjoy a nice walk to the beach in Condado.
