We spent 1 night in the Sheraton Old San Juan the night before our Royal Caribbean Cruise.
We found the hotel to be of about a 3 star standard. It served the purpose we wanted it for but I didn't see it as a hotel you would spend more than a couple of nights in.
We arrived at the hotel at about 11pm after a long flight. The taxi ride from the airport didn't take long although the traffic around the hotel was very bad and we were stuck in a queue for about 15 mins. We checked in smoothly and were given a free upgrade to the 'governers suite' which was nice. I feel bad passing comment as we were upgraded for free but I will mention a few things about the room in case you are thinking of booking that room. The room was huge with a seperate bedroom, bathroom, big lounge, dining area and 3 large balconys with a great view. It was nice but VERY dated. The decor was very tired and grubby and I wouldn't have been happy if i had paid extra for that room. There was a lot of traffic noise outside the hotel and we could hear car horns from the room at night. The pool on the roof of the hotel was small but we didn't have time to use it anyway. I felt that the hotel was nice and friendly but in desperate need of a refurbishment. As i said ,if it's only for one night it's fine and it was clean!
We ordered room service as it was late when we arrived, the food was nice but expensive! The whole hotel including the room rates are very pricey but I think this is common for San Juan with it being a cruise port.
The hotel was positioned right near the Carnival Cruise pier which would be ideal if you were cruising with carnival. The Royal Caribbean pier was over the other side, which we knew before we booked but it wasn't a problem to get a taxi and only took a few minutes.
The hotel is ideally located if you want to explore Old San Juan, like we did! We had a full morning before our cruise to look around and found it to be very charming. We explored on foot and visited one of the forts and walked to the cathedral and round the brightly coloured houses and shops. San Juan is really a beautiful place to visit.
The only major problem we had was when we arrived home and checked our credit card. There was a £16 charge on it which we had no idea what it was for. We paid for room service in cash when it was delivered including a tip and had nothing else while we were there! After sending numerous emails to the hotel i have heard nothing back!
