“If you Snooze before you cruise...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

Four couples about to set sail on Carnival's Southern Caribbean cruise. Looked into shuttle services...forget it. Exiting the airport, approached the driver of a 10 passenger Ford F350 van. $35 for all of us. Shuttle service:$90. 20 min/8 mile drive. Only go for a flat rate instead of metered. Don't hesitate to negotiate. Driver very informative and gave us recommendations. Requested rooms on same floor. This didn't happen. Probably due to our late (Midnight) arrival.
Hotel retains it's old world charm. Rooms quite comfortable, but not modern by any means. Wi-Fi was very fussy. Staff very curteous throughout our two day stay.
Burger restaurant on the property is overpriced at $12-$16. CVS a block away for last minute necessities. Subway across the street. Starbucks is a quick 5 min walk. Free trolly stops across the street...great way to get around the city IF there's room to get on.
We picked this hotel to avoid additional shuttle charges. Worked out perfectly as the hotel is only 250 yards to Cruise terminal 4. Even dragging our suitcases it wasn't more than ten min away.
Late check out is only noon. Period. They held our bags without issue. The casino was very clean and enjoyable. If you love to walk and explore...this is the place. Rooms a bit on the expensive side ($200 per night), especially factoring in age of the hotel.
Very visible police presence along the docks. Oddly, very comforting.

We are here for the week and absolutely love old san Juan. The hotel is just perfect for location to everything including the ships if you are cruising. My husband and I are not just taking it all in. The rooms are great and the staff have been just wonderful. Rooms are clean and big with a wonderful view of the ocean. You do have to rent the fridge but no problem. we were no longer in our room and they were there with it. So very nice and courteous. Kent and I have traveled many places but in all honesty this has been the friendliest. Plenty to do from food, to drink, to dance. Only thing is we came a week to late to enjoy the festivities that happen every Christmas time. But next time, yes next time we will try and come when they are happening and yes we hope to stay at the Sheraton. Oh and did I mention the casino is smoke free another plus in staying here.

Dear Ms. Williams,
Thanks for sharing your feedback about your recent stay with us. You probably missed the SoFo food festival but the Beauty of Old San Juan is that it's hot and lively 24/7 all year round. During the Holidays the town has all the XMAS decor / lighting all the way thru 2nd week of January for the world famous San Sebastian festival and so on. This city never sleeps. That's it's the Caribbean's most visited city. Anyhow, glad you both enjoyed and we can't wait to see you back.

We were taking a cruise out of Puerto Rico but wanted a chance to see something of the island before our cruise. We decided to say a couple of nights in Old San Juan and chose the Sheraton because of its location. When we arrived we were greeted very warmly and escorted to our room. The beds were comfy and we could see one of the forts from our window. There are two restaurant, but we only ate in one. The casino was nice, and thankfully when we were there not over filled so there was machines to play. The only downside was the wifi in our room. We were able to logon with the help of the staff while we were in the lobby so we were able to send messages home from there. Also the water pressure in the shower was not what we are use to, but it was adequate. Plenty of hot water. Overall due to its PRIME location we loved it. The staff was very helpful with our questions for site seeing and assisted with suggestions for the different things to see and do. There is a pool, but we didn't use it as there was so much to see in the area. There are many restaurants very close to the hotel and so we only ate once on the property. We would recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: Our room was on the 7th floor and was away from the elevator and vending machines so we were quiet a...

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. More importantly, we are glad to learn you really enjoyed your visit to our property and the exciting Old San Juan. It certainly is the town to see if you want the real flavor of Puerto Rico. We regret to learn you had some issues with WiFi in the guest room and water pressure. We recently added the WiFi to the guest rooms and are still working few spots for better signal with our provider as we speak. Just this week we more than doubled the bandwidth due to increase demand. Water pressure is seldom an issue but will examine based on your feedback. Again, glad you liked it here and look forward to your visit (or your friends) in a near future :-)

On November 7th, 2012, we flew from Seattle, WA to San Juan Puerto Rico via Philadelphia on US Airways. We landed in San Juan at 10:30PM; it was just a $26 cab ride from the airport to our hotel. Since it was late at night, traffic was non-existent. I am so glad we planned a three night’s stay in San Juan before our cruise. This gave us a chance to adjust to the four hour time change, and to explore Old Town, shopping, restaurants, and forts. We stayed in the Old Town area. We walked everywhere. We had no problems. The locals were so friendly and helpful. Great shopping opportunities with quaint stores lining the cobble stone streets. Great picture taking, everywhere!!!
We stayed at the Old Town Sheridan Hotel. We reserved a suite, with a water view. We got more than we expected. The hotel was perfect. We loved both restaurants. The hamburgers were huge, and our steaks dinners were fantastic!!! We paid for top end meals, but well worth the price. We even pocketed $30 from our casino visit, we felt like high rollers!!!
The day of boarding our cruise brought a small surprise. Our hotel was located across the street from a cruise ship dock, the surprise: Royal Caribbean’s dock was across the bay. A $20 cab ride took us door to door. I heard from other cruisers who paid a lot more in transfer fees from other hotels to the ship I would suggest getting a price prior to getting into the cab (they all seemed willing to negotiate prices).

Room Tip: Book a junior suite with a view

I stayed at the sheraton old San juan for three nights at the end of October. I would not recommend anyone staying here, unless you are hell bent on gambling in the casino and going straight from the slots to your dingy room above!!

My room was completely outdated, smelled of cigarette smoke, and did not feel clean. The room itself was basic and what you'd expect at an economy hotel. Don't stay here if you're looking for a nice, updated clean room. On top of the subpar structure almost every staff member I interacted with performed poorly. The front desk was not knowledgeable of standard accounting procedures regarding my credit card, the valets let my girlfriend open her car door and carry her own luggage without ever asking if she'd like assistance, and it took me calling the concierge desk 3 times to get the answer to a simple question about rum distillery tours all while he took down my number and was supposed to call me.

We are truly sorry for failing to deliver the quality experience you are entitled to. Although valet & concierge are concession stands, we demand they meet our brand standards. Your feedback is a valuable tool for us to address these areas of opportunities. All of our room product will be considerably enhanced in 2013. We hope we can be of service to you in the future.

We arranged for an extra night in San Juan after a cruise. The Sheraton was within 200 yards of the pier. They were very accommodating regarding early check-in and stored our baggage while we toured the city. Room provided a harbor view, and had a small balcony. Room had a card activated safe for valuables. The hotel elevator required a security card (room key) to access guest floors. We ate breakfast at the hotel dining room -- very good, but pricey. Had lunch at a burger joint that is part of the hotel. Staff was friendly. Cab to airport was about $25 with tip. The hotel has a roof top exercise room and pool. This was a very good end to a great island cruise. Old San Juan has free trolley service that runs from about 9 am to 6pm -- a great way to get around that part of the city. Evening was pretty crowded on the streets with visitors from cruise ships.

Room Tip: Harbor view room was worth the extra cost.

Glad you enjoyed your cruise and your post cruise stay with us. It's important to end your vacation on a happy note. Great tips, although visitors going on a cruise should double check is same will be docked at Old San Juan. Few dock at the Pan American pier which is across the bay 1.5 miles from us. Anyhow, nothing beats the vibe and convenience of being in the heart of Old San Juan. Hope to see you soon.
