“Honeymoon on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2010

We honeymooned here on HHonors points. The property is beautiful - on the water and with a lagoon beach. The hotel had some trouble finding a king bed room for us as they apparently had a full house, but put us in the villa (time share, sort of) section. The hotel spa was average. The beach cabana, rented by the day, was amazing. Hotel service could be slow (an hour plus wait after requesting bathrobes from housekeeping and almost 45 minutes one day for a beach umbrella). Perhaps that is the island way though? The hotel has a list of daily activities including yoga, pilates, fish feeding, Latin dance lessons, and the very important daily pina colada "tasting."

Honors Gold and Diamond get a continental breakfast in one of the restaurants that has been converted into a breakfast lounge of sorts. Restaurants are resort pricey ($26 breakfast buffet, about $100 for an appetizer, drinks and dinner for two at Morton's or the Asian or Italian restaurants. Two burgers and drinks at the pool bar were $65. We later found the Subway at the end of the entrance driveway and excellent pizza/Italian delivery from Charlie's. We also enjoyed the Parrot Club and Puerto Rico cafe in Old San Juan and Delirio in Miramar/Condado for our romantic Valentine's dinner.

While hotel relaxing was nice, also check out Old San Juan ($12 cab each way), El Yunqe Rainforest and/or the bioluminescent bay (through Kayaking Puerto Rico).

I used to work in PR right out of colege and the Caribe Hilton was my favorite hotel in the world. Old world ambience, the best staff, their own beach and the best tropical bar I had ever been to and I stayed there on and off for 2 years.

25 years later we decide to bring the family to PR and my first choice, of course.... is the Caribe Hilton. Fly into San Juan late at night, cab ride takes less than 15 minutes and is less than 20 dollars. It's 3 am in the morn but we are greeted warmly, we easily find our room and we sleep soundly wakening to yet another beautiful day in paradise. We stayed in the lagoon villas where they are a bit more spacious and a bit removed from the main core of the hotel, they have their own pool and hot tub and it was very nice. However, the AC blew only one speed and temperature and so we asked to move to a room so they could fix it. The staff was very accomodating and our second room on the 5th floor ended up w/ a much nicer view and an AC that worked.

The Starbucks was the choice for morning fare 4 of the 5 days and was great. However, even though my teenager had one of the cards that showed he could charge and he was on the list to charge, they wouldn't let him so it was a bit disconcerting for him the first day. We also ate at Morton's (great), tried to get into Lemongrass when supposedly we did not need reservations but actually should have had them, and Malerbas for breakfast one day (nice buffet w/ great fruit and cooked to order eggs).

Wifi always worked, we rented a cabana one day for $100 and it was well worth it, the staff needed to be reminded on the waters etc, but came through w/ shining service, the outdoor luch by the pool was casual and unhurried, the towel return was inconsistent and we had a charge on our final bill even though we had returned the towels(be careful as the pools are open to 9pm but the towel return closes at 6pm) and they gracefully removed the charge.

There is a Hertz rental right at the hotel and it was an easy pickup and return one day when we took a spin @ the island. The concierge printed out of boarding passes, gave us a great recommendation on an ATV trail riding adventure, they had coolers of water in the lobby w/ fresh fruit in them for the thirsty throughout the day, the beds were comfortable and the weather divine. Nice pool and hot tubs, great views across the water and a really pleasant experience.

I really like the private beach and NOT being in Dorado which is just a strip of hotels like any other place, the location of the Caribe Hilton makes it special and private. The cab into Old San Juan is only $12, although you could walk it if you want.

While the Caribe Hilton still retains a bit of it's old world charm it has moved on and while a bit inconsistent w/ its services, the staff makes up for a very good experience and still my first choice when I go back to PR.

We stayed at the Caribe Hilton for one night prior to our cruise after booking our room on Priceline. We were able to get the room for less than $100. Our check-in was painless and the staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. Our room was located in the Honors Tower on the 10th floor. The view was fabulous, as we were able to sit out on our balcony and enjoy the view and the lovely weather. Our room was spacious and clean. The bathroom was a pleasant surprise. It was the biggest bathroom I've ever seen in a hotel room. It had a HUGE shower and a double sink vanity. We shied away from the Caribe's restaurants because of the prices and chose to take a short 10 minute walk to Escambron Restaurant for dinner. A wise choice, as dinner was wonderful. There is a small market across the street from the Caribe where we picked up wine. We didn't spend a lot of time checking out the hotel, but did take a stroll along the beach behind the Caribe and thought it was very well-maintained. Because of other reviews we don't think we would stay there for any more than one night due to the "extra costs" that seem to be incurred with amenities and food costs. Also, while the view is beautiful, we'd rather be in a more convenient location to restaurants and tourist areas if we were staying for an extended time. But for a night, it was well worth it to get a good night's sleep in a clean, comfortable room, with good service.

This hotel is only 10 minutes from the airport. Staff is great and very helpful. They have a tourist desk which doesn't rip you off like other ones do. Was at the Conrad first and it was very bad. Staff was rude there. Changed to the Hilton and staff was so nice. Pool area great and beach area was very clean. Had nice places to eat but can be pricey but hotel restrauants are most of the time. If you have time book the snokeling tour through the hotel great price for what you get.

Best beach area imaginable-perfect!
Nicest group of employees I EVER encountered! Even the Executives say HI!
Food quality is excellent. Prices are quite high. Try the new Pina Colada bar for the best wraps in San Juan.
Room was lovely, quiet, clean, well appointed.
No live music or casino-can't be perfect...

While I gave the hotel 4 stars, I may not have if it were not for the great price I got on Priceline. ($90). Don't get me wrong, not disappointed in the least with the hotel, but you do get the feel that it "used to be" a five star resort back in the day. People are correct in saying there is not much in 'immediate" walking distance, but there are a couple of small places to eat/shop.
Pros
Phenomenal grounds, pool, beach. Perfect for kids and couples alike.
Nice ambience
Great check-in staff, housekeeping
Close to old San Juan
Great fitness center
Cons
Overpriced restaurants. (people are correct in saying that a 20% reduction in price will probably double the customers)
Weak concierge (although Antonio was great) and a horrible towel stand representative. I didn't get his name but he was tall with glasses. He literally acted like he was doing the guests a favor and used his all-powerful authority to treat people with an attitude. My wife and I personally encountered it twice. If the hotel was stronger they would have/should have picked up on him.
Hotel definitely caters to business clients. Not that it's a bad thing, but on vacation I'd rather see other vacationers and not be reminded of what I left behind at home.

All-in-all, we were happy and after visiting the Condado next door, we were pleased that Priceline chose this one for us.

We stayed 10 days at this resort. We were able to get it at a great price on Priceline. There is no need to go anywhere else. Great food at the recently opened Pina Colada Bar (they have the best servers of any restaurant we have ever been to and we travel all the time) , private beach and beautiful pool area. Very relaxing...just what we needed.
